As I understand it, the Murano's computer applies AWD only when it detects wheel slip (such as in snow or ice conditions). You can force it into AWD with a switch (for stuck in the snow type conditions), but as soon as your speed exceeds some low number (10 MPH???) the computer takes over again.
And that said, I think that virtually all AWD Murano owners have had no problems with their Transfer Case. A VERY few folks have, and that becomes noticeable because of the very high cost of repairing/replacing the Transfer Case. (Similar situation to the CVT). Consumer Reports shows the reliability of the drive system 2006 and 2007 Muranos to be better than average. And the 2009 Murano (introduced in 2008) to be far better than average (same as the Lexus, Infiniti, etc....).
If you remain concerned about possible cost of Transfer Case repair, you might want to consider an extended warranty on the drivetrain only. Should be pretty cheap if the new extended warranty on on the CVT is factored in yet. (which it may not be yet.)
