I got my rb25 like 2 months ago and took it apart to replace all the gaskets and and belts and all that. Also took the head apart to clean it. Problem is that i'm so disorganized I just started taking off bolts with no regard to where they went and just threw them in a box. Thats no biggie just time consuming as hell but what i'm worried about now is setting the timing. I put the head together last night and I think I got it pretty close to the FSM instructions Here are some Pics:

Before you ask yes I put it back together in my kitchen, my wife is out of town for the week so I decided to avoid the hellish heat in my garage. Anywho here is a pic of the block so you can see the position of the pistons:

How the hell do I put this ish back together? I dont think I can put it on like I have it cause cylinder 6, if you look the valves are open but the piston is all the way up. Thanks for any input and sorry for the stupidity.

to be safe, rotate your crank a bit so the 1 and 6 pistons go down a a little and none of the pistons are up at the top. once your head is on and everything is tight, slowly adjust the crank and the cams (i see you put them approximately in the right positions already) so you can line up the timing belt.

you really should've put the head on first though, then the cams. it makes putting in the head studs much easier. now you have to turn the cams to tighten the head studs, but it's still doable. just a pain now. like i said, make sure none of your pistons are all the way up so you can freely rotate the cams to get a socket on the head studs

I guess that is my question is how do I "adjust the crank and the cams" I can put the crank bolt on to turn the engine but once I put the head on how will I know how I need to adjust the cams? I moved the pistons this should give the valves clearance. but once i put the head on and the timing belt how will I know if everything is in sync?

you turned it too much.

Set the block to TDC with cylinder 1 all the way up.

Then give it a quarter of a turn or what ever you need to get the first and last piston slightly lower then the deck of the block.

Head is pretty close to tdc. Drop the head on the block. Head bolts installed. Torque.

Now turn the crank back to TDC (by turning the quarter of a turn back of where you originally turned it.)

This means don't do a complete spin on the crank. IF you moved it a quarter turn clock wise to drop the piston a bit before the head was one, you'll turn the crank a quarter of a turn counter clockwise to TDC when the head is installed.

Fine dial in all your markings for each cam and crank shaft. Install timing belt according to FSM.

Good luck.

yea, turned it too much. 1 and 6 should still be the ones closest to the top. theres no concept of "TDC" when the head isn't on. then keep track of which way you need to go backwards like coolwhip said to get it back to tdc after the head is on. if you feel any contact, obviously stop and adjust the cams

if you want a copy of the Factory Service Manual email me, it tells you step by step how to do all of this(for the most part) and has all your torques.

you do. its located on the front of the intake cam gear. you'll have a bolt that goes through the cam get and onto the intake camshaft itself behind the mechanism and spring.
