Alright guys, just failed, barely. I am in AZ by the way. We have some of the most strict laws, I think second only to California. So this might help some other people that have emissions/smog coming up.

Car: S13

Redtop SR, S15 turbo, FMIC, hks vented to atmosphere, hi-power exhaust, no egr, no charcoal/evap, brand new catco cat, Power FC. It's also running on low boost, around 8lbs. Not running the greatest either as it needs to be tuned.

I ran the car to 1/4 tank and added two gallons of denatured alcohol. I also retarded the timing -10 degrees via the Power FC before they drove it on the rollers.

HC (1.60) - 1.75 FAIL
CO (15.00) - 3.15 PASS
NOX (2.50) - 2.51 FAIL

Fuel cap - PASS
Pressure test - PASS
Evaporative system - FAIL

Did I retard the timing too much? I was debating on whether to pull 10 degrees or five. I know the alcohol helped.

Also, to pass the evap. system, do they do some kind of test? Or is it just a visual?

Get a proper tune. That would be my first step. Not sure if the charcoal canister is visual or not, but I would leave all that garbage in your car and run some random hoses everywhere. Is that cat a high flow or a factory replacement?? I asked because you might need a factory replacement California emissions cat.

You can use a Z31 cat. It is going to be a tight fit though and will rub a little. Depending on your exhaust. It will only be temporary. Sea foam and "Guaranteed to Pass" should be your two best friends now lol.

Ended up getting the car registered without having to go through emissions. Kind of annoying that I spent money on a cat and the alcohol, but in all honesty I really don't care. It's legal now.

But a tip for those having to go through emissions, the alcohol really helps, A LOT.

How do you register it there without having to go through emissions?

If you're in AZ and are really interested, pm me. I can point you in the right direction, but it's really nothing special.

It's not like some crazy unheard loophole in the system.

I got my car registered and don't have to pass emissions until October, but I would like to
know what to do when the time comes.
I have no idea how to p.m. people on this site but my e-mail is [email protected]

Incorrect. Doesn't work in AZ. All our emissions testing facilities are State-run, and automated, so there's really no way to "game" the system. Fines for bribery and falsification of results are huge.

This is why I contend that AZ's emissions laws are more strict than CA. No "homey hookups" here.

Christian, did you use my tried-and-true method? ;) If so, well-done.
