Got my '91 NA 2+2 this past May. My gauge seems to do wierd things also, but then, (when all else fails) I looked in owners manual. The manual shows a pretty wide spread (15lbs-70ish) as being acceptable which made me feel better but still seems like lots of variance. I posted similar question and the NICO gang suggested sending unit. My car does not leak or use any oil between changes (150,000+ miles). OSCN

Yea sending units are problematic, are are something that will need to be either worked on or replaced. If all your oil is staying in without loss its not a major thing thus far for the most part. If you have access to install an aftermarket unit as temporary (if you have it layin around or something) you could easily test that. Since most people don't, you could just replace the thing.

My unit changes a lot too, but my car runs smooth and doesn't consume massive amounts of oil. I want to install a more precise gauge to monitor it more accurately however or a better than stock sending unit, I am really picky with readout inaccuracies and taking chances. I want to know what is happening every second to the car and Im the dude with the tech stuff glowing from the inside as I adjust things, thats just me
