i just got an 89 HB and it has failed emissions twice, the first time it was warmed up, the second time it wasnt, the guy before me had put an autozone muffler on there and clamped the pipe on himself, could this be a problem? he also said that the timing could be off or the air/fuel ratio is messed up...what should i do, should i get a tune up or what? thanks

here are the emission testing results

test #1

my vehicle standard result

hydrocarbons 1.07 1.60 PASScarbon monoxide 19.31 15.00 FAILNOx 2.23 2.50 PASS

test #2

my vehicle standard result

hydrocarbons 1.27 1.60 PASScarbon monoxide 15.21 15.00 FAILNOx 2.82 2.50 FAIL

what do you think? the first time it was warmed up, the second time was not warmed up, but the carbon monoxide was way closer to passing tell me what you guys think

Carbon and NOX FAIL have to do with the catalytic converter.

From the Co reading your car is running rich, as for NOx, your egr controls the NOx output by keep the combustion chamber temp down... I'd check your fuel pressure regulator... but it's not too bad of a reading. For the nox, try cleaning your EGR ports and throttle plate with some carb cleaner.. probably just carbon'd up

looking at the readings and since the car wasnt warmed up the second time, I would say your fuel system is clogged up. It should be pretty easy to fix. It would take a little while to explain so if you want to hear let me know.

ok just a little info for you, I am qualified to have my smog license but am too lazy to get it lol. First I would recomend running a compression test on the car. If compression is high like above normal that means that there is a lot of carbon build up in the combustion chamber. This will cause NOx when the car is warmed up. When the car is cold the carbon will soak up fuel which will cause more fuel to be added to compensate. I would find out what kind of egr (positive or negative back pressure) the car uses cause I dont know. Test the egr to make sure its working. Check fuel pressure to make sure its within spec. if its 10 psi over the fuel pressure regulator is shot. Once you figure out what is wrong the fixes are pretty easy. If its carbon buildup..use an injector cleaner. BUT DONT JUST DUMP IT INTO THE FUEL TANK. Instead suck it into the intake manifold through a vacuum line it works better that way. If your egr isnt working right replace it (just make sure you replace the gasket also). Also tap on your cat. if it sounds hollow that means its useless and replace it. if you have can check to make sure your oxygen sensor is working well also.

When you go to get the test make sure you fill the tank with the highest octane you can get your hands on. Make sure you warm up the engine yourself that way there is no mistake.

Let me know if you need any other info

Man you should give like "pre-smog" tips to help pass. SO far it sounds awesome.
