Alright so ive had this car for about a year now and im finally starting to get into a position where I can work on it. Its a 91 240sx HB with an s14 vlsd and a stock KA24DE motor.

What I do know I want to do to it is the following:Motor swap (want around 400whp) + any motor upgrades to reach this.5 lug wheel conversionModest strut/spring assembly for good performance but still reasonable dd comfort.180 conversion

What and where should I start? Ive go a list of typical motor upgrades (RB20/251jz/ls1/sr) but im not sure which given my performance target. Im not looking to spend a huge amount but medium price range.

Just keep on researching and you'll find out what's best for you. Spend on big ticket items first like a motor swap. That's what I'm doing. If I keep buying small stuff, I will never be able to afford a motor swap. Set and plan out your priorities.

None of this has ever been done or talked about before, this should be a great thread

This is the list of things that I would do first. ( I don't know the condition of your car so it is hard to tell what you should do first)

1. Suspension2. Brakes 3. Engine4. Interior5. Exterior

i agree, suspension comes FIRST! then brakes then engine then for me exterior then interior

lol we all remember our we want a bazzilion hp days!! but plain and simple most people DO NOT NEED A BUNCH OF HP

its true, alot of people get down in the modest 150 to 200 hp range, i say before tackling aesthetics or even hardcore engine stuff (even though im sure your car looks great 180sx out) go for track experience and improve your skills so that you can handle more hp effectively

Yeah suspension is pretty high on my list but the motor has 188k miles on it and I just thought id be nice to tackle first.

If your engine is in good running condition, there is no reason to replace it. Even if it does have 188k, you can get another 112k put of it easy, if you take care of it anddon't beat on it 24/7.

It also means your suspension stuff have 188k miles on it. Of course, you can drive on busted bushings and blown shocks where a blown motor will get you nowhere, but 188k on a KA is fine.

Get to know more people modding their 240sx. Try their mods, maybe you will get the general feel of how good/bad you like them.

I enjoyed my SR'ed S14 with KYB AGX and RSR springs on stock wheels as much as with coilovers with adjustable arms on G35 18s. Of course potholes now suck... I do not race it. I DD it.

Since your "horsepower" goal can be reached by all the choices you have, nobody can really help you out. It is about what you wanted. And stop thinking about horsepower goal. Stop being the paper racer.

Fixed to reflect my priorities. At my stage in life, I find it better to look good rather than actually be fast. I mean, unless I'm tracking the car from time to time, that power is mostly going to waste anyways.

My engine has a small oil leak (or rather its burning oil somewhere) not huge or anything but it does result in a slow oil deficiency over time. It runs fairly strong (idle somewhat high? 1.2k).

When it comes to the engine choices yes I know they all can reach that goal but I guess the question (or what I stated in the original post) is which one is most feasible with modifications and etc.

if your really looking to get close to 400 hp and are wondering which would be the cheapest and safest way to reach it

i think that an ls1 would probably be your best bet

The easiest to get 400hp out of would be the Ls1 or the 2jz

I agree. The first 2 are set in stone and shouldn't be changed. And the other ones Can be changed depending on the condition on the car. If you have beat to hell fenders, get new ones before you go nodding the car, if your engine is missing like a Mfer , do a tune up.

Number one on the list should be Matinance.

car should have roughly 350-400whp through a 5spd. do some usdm camshafts for a cheap $100 upgrade, USDM fuels for another cheap $250 upgrade 400whp can come easy, or you could go with a XSpower $1500 single turbo kti and make well over 400whp.
