Ok, here is my situation. I have a friend who drives a 1995 civic ex (don't we all? :rolleyes ) and It's stock besides the drop In K&N filter. Now I haven't seen this yet, but he CLAIMS he can hit 110mph in 3rd gear. He just told me, and I thought hell no. Someone back me up here with some stats to throw at him. I know this guy real well, and he's not a ricer of any sort, and he swears up and down, but I still think no way.

His car doesn't have the gearing or the power to reach that high in 3rd gear. I told him his tach or speed-o is broke, but he says no. I mean comon, his top speed is like 130 MAX and he can hit 110 in 3rd? and only uses 2 full gears for 20 mph?

But what if his speed-o really is broke? What is he proving there?

If you're in the car, it's quite easy to tell if you're going 110 or 60, no matter what his speedo reads.

Hoo boy.

Actually, you *might* have to back out on this one. I had a 94 Civic Si, and I could reach 130 without too much difficulty (got clocked at 121 going through Utah:()

The only question might be the 3rd gear part, but it might be pretty damn close... The Civic is in it's sweet spot in the powerband at high RPM's, so it might be a close bet. 5th gear is ACTUALLY slower in the Honda, as the ratio is too high - Top speed of a tad over 130 comes in 4th gear, as 5th can't keep up with the aerodynamic resistance.

bet it'll maybe hit 135 tops(all I got out of my '90 Teg, well right in there anyway...)

reminds me of my friend telling me his ZX2 escort can do 140 when it's an auto governed at 107.

I asked him if he cut the wire and he was like "huh?"

Well the 2.8 is a close rival, but not quite the 1.5 honda.

The 97' civic hx I did a SI swap on for a buddy of mine will hit 135 mph. It has a 2000 SI motor with an intake and exhaust. I thought that was fairly impressive.

It will hit around 105 to 110 (not completely sure what mph) in 3rd before the 8200 rpm redline. I have done it numerous times. Top speed is basically HP vs resistance, provided you have the gearing right.

vtec turning 8000 rpms in 3rd will deffinately be close to that speed with any of the honda transmissions, as long as it has the HP to reach that speed.

This thread makes me laugh.

The fact that Hitman used to drive a Civic makes me laugh, tenfold.

Man my gears must be real short, I only hit 113 in fourth. But then I still have two to go.

Some of us move up in life... :D

Actually, my Si was a nice car. Quick (but not "fast"), reliable, relatively attractive... I think I have a pic in Member's Rides.

Any comment on the technical aspect of this post, Ryan? Perhaps you can validate or counter the info we've given Tachy....

My '99si was close to this. ~100 was about the limit for me, because it never made sense to leave it and bash 3rd, as there was more pulling power available by switching to 4th on a quick top speed run. The sooner you get there, the sooner you can slow down and avoid jail time.

Can't hit 130 in third.

Although every Honda I've been in has managed to do 120 (or more) in fourth, even my friends 1.5 DX (I was waiting for that thing to go "pop"). Highest top speed I've ever been witness to was riding shotgun in a 2000 GS-R...145, it was up there.

AZ hit it on the head though. 5th gear isn't all that beneficial for a top speed run in most Hondas.

Fifth gear usually isn't in most five speed cars, I don't think it helps mine any either, not sure though, haven't got around to topping it out, I can do 117 or so in third though, just about enough to peg the speedo...
