You need to have your mechanic confirm whether it's just the ball joint that needs replacing (the small pyramid-shaped piece with the rubber boot, that's threaded on the end) or the whole upright assy (aka spindle). The ball joint is sleeved into the upright with a steel insert, and it's actually pretty easy and cheap to replace... changing out the whole upright is another story, as you have to remove a lot of components to get it in and out... not to mention the fact that the upright costs a LOT more than the ball joint.
