So, I'm soon gonna buy a car and i have 3 strong candidates: 95' BMW M3 (euro spec, 282hp), Nissan 300zx Z32 and 97'-98' Silvia s14 (with sr20det). Thing is, I want to use it as a daily driver, but do some mods. On that aspect the m3 is a bit different because it has a N/A engine and with 282hp from 3.0 liter engine it can't go any further. Still I can't decide wich one to get. Oh, and my budget for the buy is about 12 000 euros (or 13 500 usd).

What do you want to use the car for, other than daily driving? That is important in the decision process.

I say S14, but I'm biased.

Did the Euro drop in recent months? When I went to Italy last November it was 1.03 dollars to ever euro.

I want to use it to go to work every day, I want to try 1/4 mile and use it on the track. So it has to be sort of all-round vehicle. I think that 300zx would be best but it's hard to find one in good shape, especially with M/T (+ i dont like the design very much).

All are good choices. M3 will be by far the most expensive to maintain of the 3, followed by the Z. If it were my daily beater car, I'd go with the S14 because it's the least expensive to own/insure/maintain, the most dependable, gets the best gas mileage, and the SR makes it a wolf in sheeps clothing.Good luck

on gas mileage i would go s14. The m3 definately can go past 282 hp there are so many upgrades its rediculous. and its reliability is pretty good bubba. as far as the price of its problems you would think they would cost less to fix european cars overseas. if i was in your position i would just have to go with the m3.

I concur with Bubba's post word for word.

BMW reliability is definitely NOT on a par with Nissan's especially in the mid-90's. Plus, you show up at a shop with an M3 and the price of repairs goes up 25%.

i agree that those bmw's are not on par with nissans EXCEPT the 300zx, a repair shops best friend. I just wonder do the prices of repairs on bmw's go up even in the netherlands?

I say go with the M3. Even though I drive a 240 and everything I think the M3 is a far superior car. It looks great, fast as hell stock, handles better and has CUPHOLDERS!

M3 is the nicest car. For daily driving I wouldn't take a 300zx... I would take the s14... but if I had the chance I'd definately want the M3 :D

Maybe it's because I'm on a Nissan message board, but I'd say go with the 300ZX. There's just something about the irrestible (IMO) about the Z cars.

It may not be the most practical choice, but I'd jump at the chance to own a Z. I can't imagine that average annual maintenance costs could be more than the BMW, but they'd certainly be more than the S14.

I say go with the Z! Having owned a 1991 300zx I can say that it was a great car to have. The other two cars are great 2nd and 3rd choices in case you can't find a good low milage Z (w/o mods) for a good price.;)

BUT, I don't want to put s/c or turbo on the m3, cause' I think turbocharging the N/A engine would be too much risk for reliability and theres not much point in running 5-6psi. Naturally aspirated M3 can probably go about 315hp, not much more. I think that I'll go with s14 and maybe try to reach the 350 goal:rolleyes

If you can afford the parts, the maintenance, and the overall high costs of ownership on an M3, go with the M3. If not, you will be sorry when you can only afford to look at the car but not drive it.

I agree. I love M3's and have driven a few. If price were no object, I'd choose the M3. But you gotta live within your budget. You might want to get some insurance quotes as the Z and M3 will likely be considerably more to insure in addition to the higher maintenance. The S-14 is not considered a sports car, so it'll be less. But my feeling is you can't make a wrong decision here as all 3 are great cars

Good luck
