Some downpipes are more expensive than others because the design is better, use larger piping and it's usually stainless steel. The better ones like Specialty Z flare their's out. An important component of the turbo is it's exhaust. The faster you can get the expanding hot exhaust gases clear of the turbo wheel and reduce back-pressure, the less it affects turbo lag and spool up. The other part is the waste gate. It also needs to be divorced from the turbo exhaust outlet so it doesn't disrupt the flow.Check out this work of art:
http://www.specialtyz.com/downpipes.htm It may not seem like a big deal, but seeing dyno results there are amazingly large gains from good downpipes, even with stock turbos.I do think though that pretty much any downpipes are still a better option that precats, even if they have been gutted.
