Okay, so about a year ago I bought a 1990 240sx for 150$ that needed some work. Of course, the dude I bought it from can't locate the key! I have a bill of sale, I have the title.. Since the car won't run yet (kind of need a key...) I am not going to waste the money to register it. . . So the title isn't in my name yet.

I called the dealership becuse a friend of mine told me that I could get a new key from Nissan using the VIN number referenceing the key code and could get a new one cut. They told me that most likely they wouldn't have the keycode in their computers. CRAP! Well I can't afford to pay a locksmith to drive the 40 minutes away from where I live to where the car is, so I'm kind of screwed there. When I bought the car by some odd stroke of luck a friends key seemed to unlock the ignition so we could turn the wheel, but since he has sold the car and didn't wan tto give me his copy of the key. I assume that because his key was so old and badly worn is why the key unlocked the ignition. HELP! What do I do?

I've tried to use a pick set I've got to unlock it and remove the lock cylinder, without any success. My next idea was to remove the key lock from the door (or the entire door) and take it to the locksmith and see if he could get a key made. I hope someone hhas a suggestion of what I can do.. this really sucks, I fear that if I don't get the car moved soon that I'll lose it, and I got way too good of a deal to risk that. Specially since my current mode of transportation is crashed to hell and burnt up.. Plus my friend just wrecked my motorcycle which was the only thing I have left to drive.

Pull off the plastic panel from the inside of the door and get the lock-handle assembly out of the door. There's a few nuts and lock actuators and weird stuff to take off, but you can figure it out.

Then take the lock-handle assembly to the auto locksmith and it will cost you like 20 bucks AT MOST to get a key cut the old fashioned way for the lock. It should take like 10 mins. when you get there.

Hey I had the same problem, bought a car but never received a key. Simply remove the lock and handle from the passenger side door( Very simple and straight forward) Take it to the lock smith and they will cut you a new key. I paid $35 for two keys and it took 10 minutes

Ah, she'll be aight. After I get the transmission installed and hopefully get it to drive I'm stripping all the paint off to sheet metal, then it'll be painted the same color as my bike.. Cobalt blue :) The paint sucks anyway on it now, clearcoat is flakeing off.

Yeah yeah yeah :rolleyes :p

I got a good deal still, even tho my car has been totaled and needs quite a lot of work. It'll be good in the end, however.

Did I see Mazda RX-7 Phone Dial Wheels on your car there Whiterps13? Lol, 150, can't argue with that, add a zero on the end of that and there's the price of my baby when I bought her.

Yep, I thought the wheels were kinda neat.. But they don't fit properly -- They're what came on the car. The lug nuts all screw on, but none of them 'seat' onto the hub. See, the problem is the Rex wheel hub is a lot smaller than the 240, so the hub opening in the wheels is too small for the wheel to fit properly. I could take a grinder and enlarge the hole on the wheel, but I'm missing one. Foudn some other nicer wheels anyway, but I'm gonna get a 4th and use the rex wheels for slicks. Going to set the car up for auto-x, I hope. :D

Don't think it'll unlock the ignition?

it might unlock it yeah, but the car has been sitting for some time, it might just not feel like starting from lack of use, dead battery, old age, etc.

If you get the key snap-cut by the weird notching device, make sure you scrape the key down with a stiff wire brush alot of times so it dosent get caught in the tumblers and stick up the ignition.

I had that problem, the key would turn when i got it, but it was real resistant to turning... just 10 minuies with the brush fixed everything.

If you can find a good locksmith they can also use the glove box, which is very easy to remove, to get about half of the pins. Then he or she will check the computer to find keys for the 240 which match those pins and give you a set of 3 or 4 keys to try. The keys should be cut different on each side so you really have 6 or more keys to try. Then just mark the side that works and have a few keys made off that side.
