I just installed a new head gasket on my 93 240 DOHC and I put the pistons at TDC, set the head gasket on, set the head on, timed the lower timing chain(crank to idler gear). Now I wasn't sure about timing the upper chain to the cams; so I just mated all the marks on the chain to the cam gears and idler gear. On the chain there was two lighter marks and one birght one! I assumed the brighter one mated the mark on the idler gear; I am 99.9% sure i lined all of the marks up perfect. Then when we turned it over one full turn of the crankshaft the marks were off by one! Sorry if this is confusing anyone but I got a few ?'s about how to do it!

1)Where is the mark on the idler gear supposed to be when you start out?

2)How exactly are all of the marks supposed to be?

3)Do I even have it anywhere near close in the picture?

*I would download the Jim Wolf write-up but my comp. is way too slow!

Somebody please straighten me out on this thing!Thanx for any help guys!

As long as all of the bright colored links matched up with the cam and idler gear notches, then you should be good. It will actually take SEVERAL revolutions of the engine to get the marks to line back up perfectly, so dont freak out cause they didnt on the first turnover.

And i am assuming that picture was taken after you turned the engine over once?

Turn the engine over again, it should line up.

Remember, the cams move at 1/2 crank speed.

if when you put the chain the right way(bright mark on idle, 2 lighter marks on cams), it should be fine, and as slpr240 said, it will take some more cranks to line it up again, i finished doin my headgasket like 3-4 wks ago, when i first put that chain it lined up, then it took a lot of cranks just to get it back to line up, and i mean a lot of cranks(i was gettin tired of doin so with a 1/2" ratchet)
