Hey all, I need help with my 91 s13, 170k on it. Ok, when I start the car the motor idles at 1100 rpm, then I give it a little stab, to about 1500 rpm, then the idle drops to stock 700. After it starts to get a little warm ( before the temp gauge moves) when I pump a little throtle into it, it studders to about 100 rpm, sometimes stalls. It starts right back up though. I can smell gas with the windows down. I think its coming from the Exhaust. It also fouls the plugs quickly, about 300 mi they get heavy carbon build up. Also, just did the oil chang, and it smelled like gas. Is that normal? One more thing, When I hit the brakes it drops RPM. It kinda sounds like Vacume leak, but it holds vac pressure on the gauge. It cracked the Brake booster line a while ago. But I replaced it. Any Thoughts? All the help Is apreciated.

I live in Corona, CA now, but I used to live in Pasadena,CA , it did it there too.

Did you take a look at your O2 sensor? How about the fuel pressure regulator?

I am running into the same problems as (Blazin Hondas). I have an 89 240sx.

I was wondering if it could have something to do with an intermittent faulty throttle position sensor....

Can anyone verify this?

Tulsa have you checked the other sensors? If so you might be on to something. Let me know. Good luck and thanks

First to clarify, this problem for me occurs at idle and sometimes while cruising at around 2500 rpm. My o2 sensor is new. I have checked my ignition while the problem is occuring at idle and it checks good so its not that.

Also when the problem occurs at idle, I play with the throttle and it starts to clear up. I checked the plugs after it occurs and they are black and the exhaust muffler outlet is black and sooty. This indicates a very, very rich mixture.

So if the bad TPS is telling the computer that the throttle is open in a position other than idle, the computer is going to send the signal to the injectors to add the specified amount of more fuel required for that throttle position which is the reason the engine wants to die. Too much fuel for the amount of air drawn into the engine.

This is my deduction to the problem being the TPS.

Good therory, Although mine doesnt have any problem while driving, it just runs too rich, It doesnt stall all the time, Does yours? If it does than I would think TPS, if not than it shouldnt be, Cuz if it doesnt it would seem to be working, just not all the time. That would sound like a connector, doesnt it? I think its probably a sensor for mine, just dont have any money to replace them. I just got a job today, so it will be fixed next week. I'll let U all know whats up on Wednsday...Even if I gota take it to the dealer.I know I said it, the unmentionable D.E.A.L.E.R. I guess I gota bend over some time 8-(.... 8-o

PS. Im not bashin your therory, just give my 1 cent.

My car i doing the same thing it won't ideal right! My would jump up from 100 to 1500 and sometime stay at 1500RPM. the worst par here is my last 3 tank of gas MPG14,20 and 22MPG so this killing me. I think it is doing the 14MPG again because with ony 50 miles I am 1/4 down from full! :help

The main sensor that will directly affect rich mixture and cause erratic idle is a bad or corrodied coolant temp sensor. This tells the engine temp and adjusts the mixture. A corrodied connection causes high resistance and a rich mixture. That would be the place to start.
