Car: Working on stuff

Hey all, I need help with my 91 s13, 170k on it. Ok, when I start the car the motor idles at 1100 rpm, then I give it a little stab, to about 1500 rpm, then the idle drops to stock 700. After it starts to get a little warm ( before the temp gauge moves) when I pump a little throtle into it, as the tach comes down it studders to about 100 rpm, sometimes stalls. It starts right back up though. I can smell gas with the windows down. I think its coming from the Exhaust. It also fouls the plugs quickly, about 300 mi they get heavy carbon build up. Also, just did the oil chang, and it smelled like gas. Is that normal? One more thing, When I hit the brakes it drops RPM. It kinda sounds like Vacume leak, but it holds vac pressure on the gauge. It cracked the Brake booster line a while ago. But I replaced it. Any Thoughts? All the help Is apreciated.

I live in Corona, CA now, but I used to live in Pasadena,CA , it did it there too.

I would check the coolant temp sensor. Not the one for the dash but the one for the ECU. Try cleaning the harness and connection to it.

What is your manifold vacum? is it normal?

It sounds like you car is running very rich. What I would do is check the vacuum I think it should be around –14 at idle I cant remember. And I would clean all my connections at the tps, coolant sensor, and air flow meter. Do you have a engine light on? And if you motor is over 7 years old I would replace the fuel pressure regulator and temp sensor anyways.

It is running very rich. I'll try cleaning the conections, the light was on, until I replaced the booster line. The car is a 91, but I dont know the entire history of the engine, I bought it used. When I bought it the check engine light was on, but it would go off sometimes. I'll re-check the vac pres. again, where should I check it at? Thanks for all the Help.

REplace the plugs, cap and rotor. Check your fuel injectors for leaks and make sure the wiring is good. I am having some of the same issues you are. I changed these parts and it got a little better. I have 3 injectors that for sure need to be replaced along with the upper o-rings. I would also check your fuel filter and if your fuel pump is stock or very old you should replace that too.

You must check the idle speed motor and/or the ICC valve. take it off and soak the part with the holes in it with carb cleaner. blow it out with compressed air and put it back. located on back of the intake manifold. u will have to take off the fuel rail to get to the last screw unless you have a special screwdriver. If you take out the injectors, i advise replacing the injector O-Rings before you put it back on.

I didn't think I had an injector leak either until I pulled the spark plugs after putting the ignition to 'ON' without starting. The gas leaked onto the plug and I could tell which injector was leaking.

If it was an injector I would smell the gas in the engine bay, Its not comming from the engine bay, its coming from the exhaust tips, and its prety strong, Its got the air, and too much fuel, and a good spark. Its gota be a sensor, I get paid friday, then its to the parts shop, yea new sensors.
