help!! intercooler question

Ive been wondering that if you have a front mount intercooler and drive on the highway wont a lot rocks damage it? Has this ever happened to anyone? Is it mandatory to put a grill on to keep those big chunks of rocks from damaging your intercooler on the highway?

Thats why you get mesh for the front part.
