just recently had the same problem whit my friends 1990, and i fixed it for him. his brake lights would stay on so long either it would kill the battery or the fuse would blow.
anyways, someone unplugged his pedal switch,(previous owner cough* cough*) i went ahead and plugged it back in the break lights just stayed on...I replaced his foot pedal switch. nothing happened still did the same thing. i thought maybe the plate on the back wasnt touching the sensor all the way so i pressed it down all the way with my finger while he watched to see if his lights would go off.
I noticed the small rubber thing that belong on the plate that presses the button down was gone. But why would the lights still stay on even when i pressed it with my finger???I went ahead and replaced off another 240 i had in my back yard and then I came up with something in my head, maybe it came off on the previous owner. stayed on so long that either it blew a fuse or melted a bunch of wires together causing it to connect and keeping the lights on then blew fuse.
We tore his back hatch interior apart and probed around with a test light and i found the brake light wire. followed it past his back seat then tore apart his driver side interior following the wire to the driver side kick panel fuse box. i found nothing wrong with the wiring.???????????
ready to give up i was ready to splice the wire and just run it pack to the pedal switch bypassing anything i couldn't get to in the or behind the fuse box. I was ready to nip the wires at the switch when i noticed something, the two wires coming from the switched looked smashed together... so i grabbed each one and starter pealing them away form each other. THEY WERE MELTED TOGETHER!!! HA! and were causing it to connect the circuit right before and thus bypassing the switch. I found it! i fixed the melted area hooked it all back up and the brake lights were working like they were supposed now.
I was very satisfied figuring out my problem:uhhuh and my friend was happy about his lights working now.
sorry for the very long story.
