Previous owner of my 97' 240sx did a 5 speed swap. I brought my car in for inspection recently and the mechanic found multiple problems. Supposedly if you do a 5 speed swap the check engine light comes on (is this true or not?), so instead of dealing with the problem the previous owner made it so the check engine light would not turn on or light etc.... Now the mechanic said I can either by a new ecu ($1k) or a used one ($400). Any help, or any other way I can fix this? The mechanic was able to pass me for inspection but the check engine light turned on again today (3 days after I got it back) and I just want this problem fixed and over with. Thanks, Dire91

I just did a 5-speed swap on my '98 S14 like a week ago and had the same problem. I picked up an 5-speed ECU for $50 and installed it and the "Service Engine Soon" light went away. It's really not that big of a deal though, the mechanic is charging you too much for an ECU, just look for one locally. It should cost you around $50-$150 for one. Did you check if everything else was done right on the swap?

I'm pretty sure there isn't anything else wrong, what else could be wrong? Now the mechanic said they made two different ecu's for the 5 speed 97' 240 and he can't tell them apart so is there anyway I could tell. Because I don't want to drop 50 bucks and have it not fix the problem.

He didn't cut the wire, he somehow just shut it off in the ecu. The mechanic played with it and the light turned right back on. This **** just blows, I hate dealing with it. Now I need to find 1 of the 2 ecu's made and put it in my car to get rid of the stupid check engine light.

find a s14a 5 speed ecu, swap, if the light is still on remove the bulb. its only throwing a code because of the bellhousing sensor. your prob rocking an s13 transmission too.

it depends on which transmission you have. the s13 transmissions have the speed sensor in the rear part of the transmission near the shift lever. the s14 trannies have the speed sensor in the bell housing. so see where your speed sensor is located then get the corrosponding manual transmission ecu
