Dagnabbit!

Just pulled into the garage. Put it in park. Rpm's increased to 1600rpms!!!! Just stits there. I shut down. Restarts fine, idle is normal for a split second, jumps to 1600 rpms and sits there.

Grrrrr.

Of course it happens when I need the car for multiple long trips this weekend for a family event.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I hope it's not horrible.

Oh, yeah, 1991 Q45t 88,000 miles, mostly local driving, oil just changed to synthetic, fixed two injectors recently.

Thankssss

Okay, it's not doing it now. Idle is kinda funny in park. Slowly moving upand down between 650 and 900 rpms, a couple of times then levels out at a normal level. Also a fairly intense smell coming from engine bay. I cannot place it, will check levels and return

Try disconnecting your battery for a while. I've had this once or twice, and that seems to cure it. Mine typically showed up in colder ambinet temperatures (below 45-50F)

my 96q has recently had its throttle position sensor replaced.first symptom was the one you describe, progressed rapidly within a day to hard shifts of transmission, then weird shifting of transmission-at too high RPM vs the throttle opening, then transmission malfunction display lit up,then tcs lights on,then to dealer who replaced TPS and solved every symptom!~ thought i was about to buy a transmission!

The Q has a backup idle switch on TPS assembly, obviously yours was misadjusted............there to protect against TPS errors, but it can be out just enough.

But his had none of your warning light symptoms, which would tell anyone what the problem was by using the AT diagnosic mode: Code 6

Thanks for the info! Come to think of it, I can't remember the problem showing up after we replaced the knock sensor harness that also contains that connection back in 2001.
