I just got my new 'used' LSD in and opened it up. There was this sensor looking thing on it that was badly smashed in and fluid was draining from it some.

I circled the part on someones picture I found while trying to research this:

What in the world is it, and what can I do to repair/replace/ or plug it up?

the sensor your refering to is probobly the abs sensor

the thing is, on that pic, it looks likt it is part of the differential cover, do you have any more pictures from a different angle?

Ok, here are the pictures of mine

Here it is without the busted 'cap' on it. Here is the mashed up 'cap' and a spring that came out when I pulled it off.

hmm, i doubt its the abs sensor now that i see those other pics, take the cover off and see if it goes to anything inside of the differential

Its a vent with a check ball and spring.

ah makes sense, thanks.

I gather the only method to fixing this then would be find a new part?

Take the cover off. clean it. Tap the hole with a pipe tap. Put a screw in bung it it and run a vent hose up the crss member. I actually put the hose in a catch can on the race car.

Obviously this vent is designed to only release at a certain pressure (even though that is very low judging by the spring), and to prevent air from rushing into the diff when the pressure drops back to normal.

While I like the catch can idea, it would not provide for either of those features.

the vent is designed to not allow the diff to build pressure and start blowing seals. If the diff gets hot enough to push fluid out then you have other issues. Allowing air back into the diff is not really an issue. On the race car I actually have the catch can in the trunk with a fitting in the bottom. If it pushes any fluid up the line then once th bubble passes the fluid runs back to the diff where it belongs. I may still have a couple of the stock parts around, I will look later.

I think I will go that route, and make a cheap catch can and mount it in the hatch area. Let me know though if you have the stock parts and maybe we can work something out.

thanks for the help, I definitely appreciate it.
