With the AC on, you have to check if the AC compressor clutch is engaging or not. If it's not engaging, you may have an electrical problem (fuse/relay/wiring) or the compressor is disabled/inoperative (due to high/low pressure switches on the air drier, overheat thermostat in the compressor itself, defective compressor clutch or the compressor itself has failed). If the compressor is engaging/running, then you have to check the Low Pressure and High Pressure sides to isolate the problem. At 86F, the low pressure should be 31-37 psi while high pressure is at 149-185. Pressure will be lower at lower ambient temp.

There is also a built-in diagnostic available for your air-conditioning system.

Could you be out of refrigerant? My 02 max finally ran out this summer.

Please clarify as to how did you check the refrigerant. What's the low and high side pressure? Such readings are helpful in fault isolation. Some have replaced the compressor only to find out that the problem was with the expansion valve. And replacing the compressor requires specialized equipment to evacuate the system, store the refrigerant, recharge the system and check for leak.

How to check refrigerant and info on high and low pressure side of compressor

On this website;
Go to top of page at Tech Pages

Page HA10 shows the AC system
Page HA31 bottom table details high and low pressures of compressor

Also Mastercool makes a lot of AC service equipment
Autozone has tools to evacuate the refrigerant, manifold guages, and refrigerant

I helped you with a 96 maxima rather than an I35. Use the URL to look for your car

I know this is a old post but I am having the same problem with my car. How do I access the "built in" diagnostic for my ac for my car?
