I need to replace piston rings in cyl 2 and 6. Does anyone have instructions on how time the motor and replacing the rings?I never opened up an rb. Can i do it with the block still in the car?thanks

you will defiantly want to pull the motor maybe you could get the pistons out but I doubt it. Also I hope your going to have the blocked measured and honed. Theres a reason why those two cylinders are low and lets say you pull the pistons throw rings on them hone the block and put it back together. If it has abnormal wear in the cylinders now and you finish hone it out at 10 over stock when you throw those stock sized rings in they wont gap right and the pistons will fit loose in the cylinders. you'll start it and it will burn oil like crazy and probably will be exactly the same compression wise. You best bet is pull the motor have it checked out and maybe you will end up needing over bore pistons but you'll be good to go and fix your current problem. "do it once and do it right cuz doing it the sec time suxs and always pisses you off" BTW if you can't find an online FSM let me know I have a FSM loaded on my laptop I can try to email it to you.

Replace the stock pistons with forged pistons, don't just replace the rings. The block should be out of the car. You can probably do it with the block in car but why? It won't be easier.

I would take that motor out of the car and take it to a machine shop if I were you.

Do you have the measuring tools and know how to use them? You can get the block honed and put in oversize rings, but I'm not a fan of that.Plus it depends on how much wall damage you have.

Also how do you know its rings???Have you done a leak down test on it?Test it first before you do anything. It could be not seating valves, bad valve guides, HG any one of those could give you oil and bad compression.

Plus also you need to check the ring lands, usually those get damaged.

Good luck bro

P.S. JE has RB20 pistons.I bought the first set and got raped because they have never made them before. Should be cheap-er now.

Hey I gotta work on the manual its too big to put in an email 30mb but anyway to correct somethings. Bad valve guides will not make you loss compression and since you say its coming out the dipstick it is 99% likely that its piston rings. I have seen pistons melt on the ring lands and cause compression loss but even there your still looking at rings. I'll get on the FSM asap I might have to post it on my website I'll keep you up to date on it.

I did a top end re-build on my rb25 put the engine back together and everytime I hit boost all my oil would blow out of my dipstick and valve cover vents. So I did a leak down test with the same results figured the piston rings were shot. Tore the motor down and took out piston #1 looked fine till I took the rings off then a chunk between #1 and #2 rings fell out. Results Piston screwed!!!!!!!!!! Hope you dont have the same luck. So now its fully built.
