My fantastic new sub box has arrived via DHL. Now I measured the size of my trunk opening and gave precise instructions as to the maximum size of the box. The final specs were quoted as smaller than these.

Either I made a mistake or this box is bigger than it is supposed to be. It won't fit, but just barely.

Is there any way to take out the rear seats or to remove some of the trim on the inside of the edge of the trunk?

And even if I could figure out how to get it in there I would have a hell of a time getting my spare tire out.

Trust me when I say this, having a sub box eating up your entire hatch sucks. I had a Escort GT back in 93, it was filled with subs and amps. Then I had to change 1 tire...now I use much smaller subs or a base tube...lol.

I definitely would not cut trim or remove a portion of the actual car. It's far easier to rebuild the box. It is after all particle board and cheap matting material. I have fabbed a few boxes in my day and would definitely recommend modding the box over the car.

However, if I read this correct, you paid someone to build this box for you. Examine the numbers you gave them and then remeasure the box. If they are incorrect they HAVE to redo it for you. Then contact them and see how they react. Remember to get names and keep emails. I can assist with filing complaints and speaking with management. No one wants the BBB called on them, nor do they want a car club with 75,000 active members publishing a bad article about them

Whats the specs on the Box?

I can take my 4 12box in and out of the car without removing panels or seats.

I have a sedan.

Its 17x24x30. I asked for it to be no larger than the opening in the trunk which it is. I guess I must have measured wrong because it won't fit. Also, 17x24x30 looked alot smaller in my head and even when I measure it inside my trunk it looks smaller but I measured the box and thats how big it is.

Crap, maybe I will just get another sub and box. Sell this one as a set, since the box is designed around that particular sub, and its not a common sub.

Ha........stupid cat. He makes my other cats look small but they are regular sized.

anyway, between me and a friend we totally made the box fit. It messed up the carpet some but we were able to straighten it out. The builder did an excellent job matching the carpet on the box to the trim in my trunk.

I will post pics as soon as I get everthing installed, maybe I will even run for ROTM.

Mobileman on CAF???

I might have him build my next box, just because im lazy and dont want to clean my garage again. And his quote price is within my "Willing to pay to be lazy" scale.

The quality of the box is excellent.

On the other hand there were about four weeks where my box was "next on the board, will probably ship out tomorrow". I would not have minded waiting over a month for my box had I simply been told so. I was actually kinda pissed about it until I saw the box. Now I am happy again.

I just started a semi Custom box for my Versa, and due to simplicity, I might start offering them to people on here.

I thought of it last night, started before lunch, and right now the fiberglass is drying.

Its still a decent sized box, but mine is going to be for 2 12inch Alpine Type Rs. This box will allow you to still pack your hatch to the ceiling and not touch a sub.

Ill post specs later. Roughly its about 1.4 Cuft per sub sealed.

Do you have any pics of the box so far? I'm just curious as to the design: where it goes, how it looks, etc?

Ok, since you asked.

Obviously it needs fully coated still, and then sanded and carpeted. But this will give you an idea.

Turned out to be bigger than I planned to get the right air space. But a smaller version for maybe 2 10s that only need about .6-.8 each would be pretty nice looking.

I would not want to build this box any bigger. It would look awesome with about 1cuft less of air space. This box made with a total of about 1.2-1.4cuft would look badass.

That's quite an interesting design... I never thought to have the subs fire into the seats like that so they're protected. Do you think they'll move enough air to sound loud? I agree about the 10's; it would allow the box to fit with the body lines a little better in the hatch area. I was thinking of pulling my fiberglass box out and building one of those drop-in cargo storage thingies that makes everything flat with the seats folded down, and then building a new box to fit a little better.

Looking at your pics, I can see that you work exactly like I do - I always choose the wrong time of the year to start a fiberglass project and need to use space heaters to dry the resin, and I can't work without a 12 pack of Dr. Pepper.

Well, ive been sucked into the world of sound quality. Trust me, 2 12inch Type Rs, are going to be capable of doing about 20 more DB facing forward than I want them too.

I did place one sub (Bravox UXP) in the box, to test magnet clearance of the rear of the box, and how it clears the seat. With the box all the way forward, it has about 2 inchs at the top before it hits the seat, and about 6 inchs at the bottem of the sub before the seat. More than enough if youve ever worked with downfire setup before.

DB is not my concern, if it was, id keep my 4 12box, OR go with a rear firing setup. I do occasionally like to go loud, hints why im still going with 2 12s, but nothing like before.

Kinda a little backround info, I had both of my ears rebuilt about 4 years ago, due to be childish over the last couple years, my hearing is almost as bad as it used to be again. So im done with all that crap now, and just want pure sound quality. It sounds boring, but go sit in a car that does SQ comps, and its like having sex with your ears. lol.

I completely understand - I got out of the SPL game when I was about 19 years old. Back then, I had cars with systems that cost more than the car (not because they were really nice audio setups, just because the cars were so crappy!). I'm just into good clean sound now that's not overwhelming.

I'm just running a two channel amp with a decent pair of polk components in the front (90 watts RMS), a set of cheap 3 ways in the rear powered by the H/U, and only 1 10" sub with a small class d amp pushing about 400 watts RMS. Perfect for what I want.

Which polks did you go with? Ive been looking into those as one of my options for a new front stage.

I heard a pair of $1400 Dynaudio 3ways a couple weeks ago. Pure sex. But im not going to spend that much.

In my price range, the nicest Ive got a chance to hear is the Boston Pro 60s.

The problem is, I can get Infinities at extremely cheap prices, but they require TONS of EQuing to sound good. I can get the 6.5 Perfects for like $125. But Im still leaning towards the Bostons.

I went with the DB6501's. I almost went with some infinitys, but I listened to them and they were just too bright, especially with the tweeters up in the A-Pillar on the Versa.

I'm pretty happy with the Polks - there are definately better speakers out there but probably not for the price I paid (just over $100).

I did a complete R&R on the OEM system in my Honda Odyssey a few years ago, and to solve the Sub-Problem, I stumbled onto the best sounding system the installers had ever heard...for under $25.00

I bought a 10" used Bazooka off eBay for $2.95, a Jensen amp for another $5.00 and with the Monster wiring kit, built a 1.2 cu foot sealed enclosure to replace the plastic tray area between the front seats.

Form followed function on the box and the enclosure has the sub firing down onto the van floor, the amp recessed onto the back, and front castors that allow the whole thing to be unplugged and rolled backwards and out of the van. The plastic tray is mounted on top of the box and with matching material cover, the whole unit is pretty much invisible.

OK point I am making is this..the sub sits right beside us and puts out the sweetest softest base you have ever heard...(well, I have ever heard)

The Sub volume control is barely cracked open and it doesn't have to be if you actully want to hear the notes on the base, and not just artilery explosions from the back seat.

It's literally like sitting up on stage, right next to the base player...

I had 6 guys from the Audio Shop jammed into the van listening the system..they all walked away grinning and shaking their heads, the shop forman said they all agreed that this front sub, firing down onto the floor of the van was better than a custom trunk full of subs blowing the mirrors off the car.

My Versa SL came with the OEM Sub built into the back trunk area, and does provide some base back there burried with the suitcases, but for real sound quality, OMG on long trips, do I long for my homebuilt, cast-off, reject, POS $25.00 system.
