I have a 91 fastback with a redtop. I swapped the motor and everything was going great. Now it is not! I am getting spark (pulled the plugs, held them against the valve cover and they sparked), and I believe I am getting fuel (You can hear the fuel pump, and when you pull the plugs they smell of gas). I have reset timing twice exactly as heavy throttle says. But when I try and start it wont start, the starter works and everything but it doesnt even attempt to start up.

Couple things:1) I am not running the MAF right now, I figure I will get it started and then worry about extending the wires.2) I plugged in the speedo sensor on the transmission, but there are two other plugs (reverse and neutral sensors?) that would not fit in the KA lower harness.3) I also have some unplugged plugs on the SR harness, but I know that many aren't used. Although I beleive all grounds are taken care of.4) I know the CAS and ignitor chip are good, I took them from a working car.5) I can hear the fuel pump, but it does not turn off after 3 sec, it doesnt turn off at all.6) I was talkng to a friend, who now is out of town, and he said that on the timing chain there are 2 links that are darker than others, and there is a notch on the cams and they should line up. I couldnt find those links at TDC, and if the notch is on the gear than I found those, but they arent lined up w/ anything. Could my cams be messed up?

I'm thinking I have everything plugged in (as far as wiring goes) because I am getting spark and fuel. So what could it be?

I'm a first time engine swapper, so it may be a stupid thing. If you guys have any ideas please say them, as I need to get this working ASAP. If you have them time AIM me at focuz on speed, please. Thanks guys.

my only guess is that the engine is flooded, and you just need to try and crank it. crank it for about 30 seconds, then let it rest for 30 seconds. Then repeat a few more times.

Smelling gas on the plugs may mean youre totally flooded. Pull all the plugs and let the gas in the clys evaporate (help it out by using a hair dryer to speed things up).

You can be flooded from stuck injectors, leaking injector o-rings, or just timing being very far off.

Make sure you check your oil for gas that may have run past the piston rings - gas thins oil which can lead quickly to a bearing failure problem.

I'd lean towards what 93Niss240 suggested. If the coolant sensor is unplugged the ECU isn't getting a coolant temp value, so it has no way to utilize the ECU's cold-cranking tables to bump up (or down in this case) The fuel maps based on temperature.
