Slow down and give yourself a moment to think...

You've got a few hits here... first, you're upside down in your Versa, and will have to eat all that money over the course of the loans.

Your monthly payments will be pretty darned high, and for a VERY long time.

Your gas and insurance costs will skyrocket with either car.

Do you really NEED either car? Or is this just a "hey, I want to be cool" kind of thing? If it's the latter, you need to re-evaluate this situation. You also need to evaluate your need for a car for the next 6 years, and make sure either of those cars will suit your needs down the road.

If you can honestly say that everything points to buying one of those cars, then go right ahead... but it just doesn't sound prudent in your situation.

Neither of those trade-in scenarios sound like very good deals to me. I'd have to say stick with the Versa.

Well, I'm going to offer my opinion here...

First, the fact that you're thinking about it in terms of payments indicates that you're probably not in a position to spend $20k+ on a new vehicle.

Second, you're likely upside down on the Versa. That means you'll be paying interest on that money on top of what you're paying for the new car for the next SIX YEARS.

Third, it's JUST A DAMN CAR. If people could do one thing to turn themselves into millionaires upon retirement, it would be to buy fewer and cheaper cars. It's the monthly payment thing that suckers people in; if you had $30k cash would you go plunk it down on a car without thinking twice about it? Likely not, but yet people are willing to sign up for a $500/6 year payment because it just seems like less money...

Truer words were never spoken. Absolutely correct in above statement. Keep your versa.. put all the extra wasted money in a IRA.

I have to agree with the others. It is only a car that provides basic transportation. If you were talking about making a living such as racing your car, then go for it.

Being upside down will just add more to the new car. Do you really want to pay that much in addition to the upside down of the V?

In my younger years I have done some things like this and totally regret it. Today I look at the car for what it is, a car. Now I must add that the Versa is not only a car, but has tons of great features. The insurance on the Versa is so low because it is not the Hot Rod and the crash test ratings are the best they can get. I actually got a check back from my insurance company for $200 on my 6 month premium once they incorporated the crash test ratings of the car. I am paying almost nothing for top notch insurance.

Before you do that, just think about it and what will it really do for you.

That is my 2 cents.

If I were the OP, I'd never do this. I never take out a long car loan, would never allow myself to be upside down.

In all fairness, though, I must acknowledge that everyone has a different interest, and for some (maybe OP included), a fun car is worth spending a lot of money for, even when the straight ROI does not make a rational sense. For instance, my wife and I spend a lot of time and money traveling, and our house is more or less empty. People who know what we make ask why we don't buy a bigger house, get a bigger TV set, have nicer furniture, etc., and we say, well, those are not our priorities.

Among our priorities is not to have a debt. So I would not do what the OP is asking us about. But it's a matter of priorities in the end. My own interests are not any better than OP's.

I agree with what you're saying, but I'm guessing you're not paying for your travels with a credit card because there's no other way you can afford them. Unfortunately, that's how people get reeled in with cars; it's perfectly acceptable and even expected to buy a car on credit and pay for a rapidly depreciating asset for years and years. Well, people should realize car payments are a CHOICE, not a necessity.

First, don't apologize for your English. We understand you perfectly, and it's far better than we can speak your language.

Second, I understand your passion for a fast car. I owned a 2002 WRX (first Blaze Yellow delivered in Wisconsin), and although I enjoyed the power under my right foot, I rarely used it. After the initial giggles wear off, the power becomes common place and it's not the same.

Third, I found I pushed the handling of my car far more than the power. I encountered far more on ramps and turns than times I needed the power.

Fourth, the Versa has some potential. Comparing the dyno charts I've seen to those of other cars, I believe the peaks are being artificially limited by the electronics or something else. It's roll-offs are unusual. I believe more power could be had, it's just going to require time and a supportive aftermarket.

Fifth, the Versa is far more versatile than either of the other cars. The rear seat of the STI does not fold down and the rear seat is uncomfortable for a normal adult (applies to 07 and earlier only).

Sixth, the Versa can be made to handle quite well. There are people racing them in China and Japan.

Lastly, "fun" is more than just power, and there are many things that can make a "fun" car into a "PITA" car because it does meet your needs. That's what I found with my WRX.

Keep the Versa.

Don't trade your car. With the information you've laid out, it sounds like a very bad idea. Especially, and this was not clear to me, if the $3,000 you have saved for faster cars is all of your savings - what happens if you lose your job or get injured and need that $3k to pay bills?

Take the advice of one of the other respondents and invest that $3k in some mutual funds or something. I appreciate that everyone has hobbies, and you need to spend money to make yourself happy sometimes. But ditching an almost brand-new car and commiting to a larger and longer monthly payment simply because you like fast cars is just not sensible. I would be suspicious of any "friend" who tried to talk me into something like this.
