Hey guys, its my first post ever, I'm really feeling the site and man are they sooo many forums to choose from, good stuff. I've never asked such a newb question before regarding my car as i've done plently of thing more advanced than this on my s13. Anyways i have a 92 s13 and I didn't bother changing the transmission Oil (Gear Oil) since i bought it which was around early May. Anyways, my question is.. when you change the rear diff oil with gear oil.. does that change the clutch oil as well? or is that another drain and fill operation? I believe it is, but i came here just to make sure. I found the Drain and fill plugs for the diff, but i didnt get time to look for the drain and fill plugs for the transmission/clutch. If someone could show me a pic or a diagram indicating these plugs, that would be great! Btw the oil i purchased was 80w-90 Motomaster Gear Oil. They didn't have 75w-90.

Thanks for reading, i hope my first post wasn't a waste of your guys time.

Welcome to Nico. And, do yourself a favor. Search for FSM (Factory Service Manual). You can download it for free and it will show you how to do everything to your car.

Hey guys,

I have the 91-94 FSM on acrobat already... the thing is that it doesn't indicate the drain plug for the clutch.. all it shows is the fill plug. I've been searching the net all day and can't find any pics.

My question, is changing the diff oil different from changing the clutch oil? meaning is it 2 jobs?

Heres what i mean:

yes it is 2 seperate jobs (even though you should not have oil on or around your clutch). The transmission drain plug should be on the very bottom of the transmission. right about where the filler plug is, just on the underside.

Oh okay, and how many litres of gear oil does the s13 transmission usually take?

Sorry i was mixed up with the diff oil and transmission oil for this whole time.

The diff and transmission both can use the same type and grade of gear oil correct?

ie: 80w-90

According to the Quick Reference Chart (back cover of the FSM), the manual transmission holds 2.4 litres of fluid.

There are two plugs on the differential, one on the side and one on the bottom. Just fill it at the filler hole until the oil starts to come out on it's own; Now it's full. Standard differential gear oil is 80W-90 GL-5. The oil capacity is 1.3 liters (1.37qts). - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - There are two plugs on the transmission; one on the side and one on the bottom. Just fill it at the filler hole until the oil starts to come out on it's own; now it's full. You can pour the oil down the shift boot hole but you should also have the fill plug off so that you don't overfill the transmission; not good for the seals. It's best to drain the old oil when it's hot just after a drive. After you remove the drain plug, clean the metal filings off of the magnet. Standard gear oil is 75W-90 GL-4. The oil capacity is 2.4 liters (2.5 qts).

Do not use a GL-5 gear oil in the transmission; it'll shorten the life of the synchros. If you have trouble finding a GL-4 oil, look up RedLine oils; they have MT-90 which is GL-4.
