Is it an auto or manual transmission? And some pictures might help. Need to know where it disconnected at?

I am going to assume this is a manual transmission and not the automatic. If it is an auto then all the 12mm bolts that hold it in place have let go! NOT GOOD. As I said lets assume this is a manual transmission.

I had the same thing happen to me on my 1986 Nissan pickup so I have some knowledge on this topic.

In the manual transmission the shift lever is held in place with a C-Clip. (Note the blue coloring I added)

The interior's shift cover/plastic trim and rubber boot around the shift lever must be removed in order to access this clip.

Once you get the shift cover/plastic trim and the metal inspection plate off you should see another smaller rubber boot. It's usually held in place to the tranmission body with a small removable metal clip or ring. Once the smaller boot is lifted up you should see the clip that needs to be locked back in place. To make it easier to put the C-clip back in place apply some vertical pressure on the shift lever to ensure a positive lock.
