I hope someone can help before I bite the bullet & take my 2002 Altima 3.5 in to the dealer. A few weeks ago, I noticed that when I turned the engine off, a funny whining motor noise was coming from under the hood. It's hard to describe, but if anyone is familiar with the sound that an automatic car antenna makes when it goes up or down, that's about what it sounds like- that little tinny motor sound. It seems to be coming from somewhere just behind the radiator, but not in that big black box looking thing in the center. As you can tell, I'm not very car-savy when it comes to what things are under the hood!

Any ideas? It has 77K miles and has been maintained very well.

The fan maybe?Try restarting it and then turning it off again... see if it stops...

How long does it make the sound for?

Don't think it's the fan.. it does this for maybe 5 seconds or so.. and it's been doing this for a few weeks now. It may do it when the motor is running too, but you can hear it very clearly when you turn the car off, especially when it's in the garage. It sounds like some kind of small electric motor running, like maybe the windshield washer? but it comes from just in front of the radiator. I wish this site had audio! It would make it easier to give you an idea of the sound.

These cars have electronic motor mounts. If it sounds like it is coming from near the radiator it is the front motor mount. They are a little bit of a Pain In The Arse to replace but i have heard them make that same noise on many occasions.
