Hi Folks,

I need your assistance. My wonderful 97 Q45 (55K Miles) had gotten into an accident but it was all body work and suspension. It's all fixed but the "Service Engine Soon" Light.

I found on this site that I could take it to Autozone for a code check. The guy found a code PO110 which stated the following:

Troublecode OBDII (Alpha) P CODE

"THE PCM HAS DETERMINED THAT A MALFUNCTION EXISTS IN THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT FOR THE INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR. INPUT READINGS ARE EITHER AT THE EXTREME BOTTOM OR TOP OF THE SCALE, INDICATING A POSSIBLE WIRING PROBLEM."

My question is can anybody interpret what this means? Or has anyone ran into this problem before and has a solution?

Thanks guys!

It means the car's computer (PCM) isn't getting a valid signal from the air temp sensor. Either the sensor is damaged or there's a break in the wire harness between the sensor and the computer. It may have been disconnected while your car was being fixed, and then left that way. Find out where the sensor is, and visually inspect it. If there's an unconnected harness nearby, plug it in. If it looks damaged, it probably needs to be replaced. You can take an ohm reading of the sensor and confirm it's bad before replacing it.

From ALLDATA:

A malfunction is detected when:

A. An excessively low or high voltace is from the sensor is sent to the ECM.

B. Rationally incorrect voltage from the sensor is sent to the ecm, compared with the voltage signal from engine coolant temperature sensor.

Check Items (possible cause):

- Harness of connectors(Sensor circuit is open or shortfed)

- Intake air temperature sensor.

The sensor is located just to the right of the cooling fan (above it).

Wow Thanks! I'm going to take a look at the connection and wires. Problem is I'm not sure what the IAT looks like. Do you by chance have or can reference a picture? Thanks again!

Its generally inside the air box (before the MAF) and the actual sensor is not visible. Try looking around there

From the diagram it looks to be above the fan, to the right, along the frame. You won't see the sensor itself, but you'll see the back of the harness exposed.

I took a quick shot after I disassembled the airpod. Is it any of these lettered parts on the picture?

Okay, Here's my story:

I tried the following:

- disconnected the battery- saw point B (harness) and disconnected it from the intake piping that connects to the airbox. - removed the intake piping to the airbox and was able to see point A. I think that point A is the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor. - I also cleaned my K/N filter which needed lots of cleaning. - I checked the lines to point B and everything looked fine. - I also dusted off point A but it was very hard to reach inside the piping. - Left the battery disconnected for 3 hours. - After reconnecting everything, the service engine light went off. WHEW. - Then I drove it around and then turned it off. - Started again and it wouldn't start. *oh great*- Made sure that the battery was connected snug.- It started but the service engine light came on again. *darn it!*- Then I disconnected the battery again. It only took a few minutes to reset. And the service light went away.- Then while the car was running, I tapped the IAT sensor harness and sure enough, the service engine light turned on. --> so this means there is something wrong with the connection. - I played with disconnecting and reconnecting until finally I taped the harness to the piping so that it won't move.

So far so good, the service light has not come on. Thanks everyone for your help. Hope this was all that was the problem. Hope those that run into this can use this in the future.

BTW, if you ever have to buy an IAT sensor, I asked the dealership and they were charging $43 + tax. Autozone doesn't carry the part.

ditto on Joe. never go to local dealer unless emergency that you can't wait a day or two.

as for the problem, fortunately, i've not had an issue with this yet, but I will say that i've unplugged/plugged that harness at least 6 times in 9 months and i really dont see any other way to remove the cumbersome airduct for access other than to unplug the harness. hopefully its designed for many mate/demate cycles.......
