Ok new guy here with little motor knowledge. 2001 Pathfinder, 125,000 miles no problems until now. Starts and idles fine, sluggish out of the driveway, backfires a bit as it warms up, loses power going up hill, misses at times, does not respond well when punching the pedal, getting worse in the last week. Any ideas or help.

P.S. In reading other posts saw where the MAF may need replaced. Have no idea what the heck that is. Talk to me like Im in tje 3rd grade. Thanks for any help.

Before replacing you can actually try cleaning it out first! If your standing facing the engine bay towards the driver side, you see your air filter box(big black plastic box)! Follow it upwards(black plastic houseing) you are going to see an eletrical socket plugged into it from the top. This is where your MAF sensor is located. remove the two screws and it comes off!

When's the last time you had the fuel filter replaced?
MAF = Mass Airflow Sensor. It's possible that is the issue.
Have you replaced the spark plugs? Cheap and easy.. might as well do it.

Is it throwing a check engine light (I guess on these they're "service engine soon" lights)? Run by an autozone / advance auto parts and get them to pull the code and report back :)

Good to go but it wasn't easy or cheap. Tried the fuel filter, nothing, the fuel pump was next, same thing, I told my mechanic what I had read on this forum, THE MAF, he called a Nissan dealer who agreed it may be the MAF. Priced new was about $500 so got a used one (about $150) put it in and I'm " on the road again" One problem though, now my fuel gage isn't working, what give my friends?

I would not describe changing the spark plugs on an '01 PF has cheap OR easy.
The plugs themselves will run close to $100, and the installation is 2-3 hours
of bending over the engine compartment.
