I haven't posted in a long time and couldn't remember my id, so I guess you could say I'm a reborn NICO virgin - time to become a SLUT! (j/k) Anyways, here's the problem - I went for emissions with a test pipe and didn't pass, but that was no surprise. I threw on my catco cat last night and went for emissions today, but to my dismay I didn't pass again. I only get one more shot at this (Illinois law) so I really need to pass. Some suggestions would be helpful. Mods are limited to stock SR w/ your typical bolt-ons (FMIC, downpipe, exhaust, boost controller, fuel pump, etc.). What have you guys done, or have you not run in to this problem? Thanks everyone.

I failed in WA 5 times, then got an SAFC, tested it on an emissions machine, took the test (with the cat too) and passed with flying colors.

I thought that too. I assume you went ahead and just leaned it out a little. My hydrocarbons were at 3.11 where as the standard is .80. Is it typical that the stock SR mapping is so rich? Worst case scenario is that in Illinois you can get an emissions waiver if you get if (a) you spend $450 in emissions replacement equipment done by a certified mechanic and can't get it to pass, or (b) you have the certified mechanic sign off stating all emissions equipment is in order and you still can't get it to pass. Lucky for me I can probably do option b, but for a small price.

Since catco cats are POS. I had to use 2 of them but thats in Oregon and they run it on a dyno and measure emissions. Just leaning it out should work if they are just sticking the thing in your tailpipe and reving to 2500.

SR's run ruch because the ECU tells it to. When I used an SAFC I leaned out the mixture but the ECU self learned that it was running lean and began to run rich again. So to counter this I had to lean it out a degree or two every 3-5 seconds to prevent the self learning and bad emissions correction. The SAFC helped my CO a lot, it made my HC go up slightly though. Luckily I was still well under the limit, you may have a bad sensor somewhere.

We have the waiver here in WA to but only need to spend $150.

Post the results of your tests... I can work off of that to give you an idea.

Thanks everyone for your input thus far - much appreciated. Ok, here are the numbers:

HC- Standard: .80 gpm/ Me: 3.11 gpmCO- Standard: 15.0 gpm/ Me: 64.6 gpm

This was on the rollers. However, I do roll 18" Work VS in the summer. I could throw these on and they would have to give me an idle test instead. If the car wasn't under load do you think it would run less rich? Again, thanks again for all your help. I knew I could count on you guys.

Since they don't measure NOx you should bump the timing about 1-2 degrees to assist in burning off the excess hydrocarbons. DO NOT hit full boost in the car with this setting, baby it over to the station or change the timing down the street.

Also make sure the car is fully warmed up.

With those numbers im almost tempted to ask if your O2 sensor is working/hooked up properly.

BTW here are all of my old results for reference, looks like I only failed 4 times
