Never removed a transmission myself but from what I've read you need at least a 2' extension to get to that last upper bolt. One of the members who has done it will give you the definitive answer soon.

I'm not sure if you're crying for attention on the plenum removal but here's a thread that will help:

On a lift witha transmission jack suppporting the transmission, we hope.

I am sure you have read in the previous posts about transmission removal that a 3' extension is required.

Be sure to replace the rear main seal also and check on the turbine sensor for leaking ATF as the transmission is required to be removed to replace it.

Moderator, please change title to Upper Transmission Bolts or something more specific. Thank you.

I knew it was a loooong extension but not a 3 footer.

30" might get it, but all references I can recall said 3 ft. 2 ft. wont', as I recall. Can't imagine doing this on the floor!

I wasn't doubting you at all. If I was going to remove my transmission I'd have to decide whether to buy food for the family or spend all my money on 1/2" drive extensions.

A lift would be nice for a lot more than pulling a transmission. I've taken my car to the shop a few times not because I couldn't do the repair but because I don't like working under anything for any length of time that's supported by jacks. I worked for a mortuary during my first couple of years of college and have a few bad memories.

I just used a long offset box ended wrench and tapped the end not attached to the bolt with a 5 pound hand-sledge a couple times.

so i would come from the back of the transmission with the 3 foot extension.. would it be easy to see the top bolts since the transmission is leaning down because the driveshaft is out?

I haven't done it, so I would suggest reading the relevant posts by those that have. Lots of good information here for those willing to spend the time assimilating it.

See the search sticky and article sticky on the top of this forum page if you need help.

No. If the transmission member is still in and the motor is still on its mounts you won't be able to see the bolts without a mirror and a light.

Maxnix is correct int the fact that there are oodles of threads/posts to read through.

The search function takes a little while to get use to, so I use to find it easier to just read every thread in the associated forums, (IOM/Q45/VH&VK),.

Also, the earliest ones never were moved from Infiniti General.

Well it definitely isn't going to be easy whatever way you choose. If you read the Factory Service Manual, you'll see that Nissan intended you to remove the engine/transmission from the Q45 as a single unit and seperate the 2 outside of the vehicle.

Working with the 2 still in the chassis will always be "hard" to some degree, or at the very least "harder" than simply pulling them as a single assembly and working with them outside of the chassis.

Also, what is hard for some is easier for others.

Calm down Maxnix. There's no need to wag your finger at me.

I'm updating my profile, which is why it is currently blank.

Great!

It's easier to analyze posted problems when location and MY and model is known. Many of us have signatures turned off to avoid wasted screen space and repetitive static pictures which no matter how pretty they are once, are more and more boring when repeated in the same thread.

When Q was built it was installed as a single assembly, sure with the proper $15,000 in tools [lift + transmission jack + tools + experienced technican] you can separate and do anything you want easily and fast.

Have you already removed all the internal bolts attaching flywheel to TC?

Stick a pry by in the teeth of the ring gear and brace it on the transmission guide pins/ dowels or something steel ran through the bolt holes of the bell housing.

Fortunately there are only 4 bolts.

On a side note, the transmission will come off of the torque converter with a bit of properly applied pressure.

After that you can just use the pry bar on the ring gear and dowels to lock the flex-plate, (aka flywheel for some), in place.

From Joe. Call anyone there as KS and plugs are marked way down until after tomorrow.

Has anyone mentioned timing chain guides and tensioners?
