Hello all, I own an '84 Nissan 300ZX Turbo..

In the last week or so, my gears have been impossible to shift. When I start up the car I cannot put it in reverse or first gear without "crunching" the gears. After a minute or so of driving, they are back to normal, shifting smoothly. It seems I need to be on a slant or a hill or some sort to roll the car to get it in gear, and it drives me crazy! I tried heating it up for 15 minutes but it still wont go in. Has anyone ever had a problem like this or heard of it? It is only getting worse... any ideas besides takin it right away to the mechanic? thanks for all ur help!!

Sounds like your clutch master cylinder is gone or out of fluid.

welcome to nico, I'd take a good long lookat the master and or slave replacement first but crunchy reverse can be a sign of a bad clutch

THANKS EVERYONE!

Last night I forced a couple of gentlemen friends to jack up the car and check the transmission fluid (think thats what it is). It was completely drained!! I think I would have just kept on driving til I couldnt any longer. U were all dead on. It still grinds a little, but perhaps it just needs to lube a bit more...not sure. thank you

hey again!!

well I wasn't present when it was refilled, however it ran great for an hour. I drove the last couple of days and it has gotten worse. Turns out I'm a little emptier on all fluids than I thought I was. the first thing I checked when this problem started was the clutch resevoir. (think that is what its called). Basically right infront of the firewall and i didnt look inside. The oil had turned the resevoir black and I had thought it was full when it was actually bone dry. I may have to bleed the clutch..I dont know much about cars, so bear with me. Well, I hope that cures all!!

Thanks for posting. I wasnt sure I would get a response. U are all super helpful.
