I put a new front crankshaft seal in the cover but it leaks now, so I made a repair ring to put on the pulley to make the diameter bigger and it still leaks, has anyone else had this problem or have a cure.

did you press it in all the way? Either that or you scratched the front sealing area when you were removing the old seal.

Hey boss,

I was in the same boat as you just a few months ago. The old (I assume original) crank seal finaly failed and was leaking about half a quart a week for the longest time. I eventually pulled everything out and popped out the old seal.

The FIRST time I replaced the seal, I used a flat head screwdriver to "pound" it into place (like a fool) and I nicked it enough to start leaking right away.

The SECOND time I replaced the seal, like a week later, I tried knocking it in place with some sort of tool and I thought that I got it all the way in, but I guess not. It took about two weeks for the crank pulley to wear through the seal and it started leaking again.

FINALLY I purchased a 1 1\2" (maybe) socket and used that to pound the seal into place. I don't remember the exact size, but I just went to SEARS and got a socket that had the same diameter as the seal. After that, it worked just fine! I've put about 20000 miles on the motor and there isn't a leak to be seen.

If you have the FSM, you'll notice that they install a new seal using a "tool". The matching diameter socket, struck with a hammer will do the same thing. The point is, don't be an idiot like me and, more importantly, make sure that the seal is seated as far in as possible!

Good luck!
