2001 Pathfinder LE 4x with 3.5 V6. Original owners - 72,000 miles

Recently noticed the AC wasn't blowing as cold as I thought it should be. I had one problem 5 years ago with a leaking hose that was replaced and the system was then recharged (by me)

I did the 10 minute cooling test per the manual. In the garage temps were around 80 with 57% humidity. Vehicle temp at center vent was 50 and it should have been between 43 to 48, so it was a little high

Moved on to the gauges. Things were starting to warm up out side so temps now around 85 with 50% humidity in my garage. With AC running: Low pressure was extremely high at 120 (it should be 41 to 54) and the high pressure was low (should be 206 to 273)

When I turn the AC off (engine still running) both sides equalize at around 85 within 10 to 15 seconds

SO - according the manual High Pressure to low, Low pressure to High = bad compressor

I am looking at buying a kit from Rock Auto (FOUR SEASONS TSN3000 Tech Select A/C Kit $318) or if anyone has any other ideas or thoughts - I would appreciate it

I would question the 120PSI low side pressure. That translates to about 98F saturated refrigerant temperature, which means it's impossible that the air was 50F coming out of the vents. 120 PSI high side pressure could make sense with it being about 85F outside.

Do you think there's any way it could be a little low on refrigerant? The fact that when you turn the AC off and the pressure goes to 85 PSI which translates to 79F saturated refrigerant temp... Normally when you shut off a refrigeration system in a situation like this I would expect the pressure/temperature to correlate closely to the ambient temperature, when the pressure settles down lower than the ambient that could mean you're a little low on refrigerant.

Obviously before tearing into the system, I'd check the easy things like the evaporator coil and the condenser coil and make sure they're not covered in dust/other crap. You're probably gonna be ending up replacing the compressor regardless, but never hurts to try..

Only thing that's nice about replacing the compressor before it pukes out is that it won't dump a bunch of crap in the system.. If a compressor grenades usually you then should flush all the system really good so you don't prematurely wear out your brand new replacement compressor.
