Help! Checking a transmission. Out of car.

I have a 5speed transmission that I'm using for my auto to manual conversion on my vert. I want to make sure the transmission isnt shot before I put it in the car. The transmission was bought off some random guy in town.

So... how can i check to make sure its not shot. And I realize I probably have to open it up. Can someone tell me what i should look for once its open.
