Today after work I started my car and it fired right up for about 2 seconds then shut off. The security light flashes like normal when the key is off, when I turn the key on it stays on solid.

I understand this is the engine immobilizer causing the problem, but why would it just decide to activate itself pit of the blue?

I have been using the same key since I bought the car. Neither my main key or my spare work and both worked just fine before this happened.

Can somebody please tell me if there is a way i can reset the security system?

If i have to pay to get this car towed to a nissan/infiniti dealer i'm getting it reprogrammed and putting it on craigslist. If only i had known what a PITAS this car would be.

Yes, that's the NATS/security/immobilizer system.
It is not recognizing your key, so it thinks somebody is trying to steal your car. Do you have another key for the car? If so, try it!
(It seems that the chip in the key you have been using"since I bought the car" just went bad .... that's why you should always have at least two keys ).

If you don't have another key, then your only choice is the dealer or a good locksmith.
I have heard that a good locksmith can fix this problem, usually for 1/4 - 1/2 of the price the dealer will charge you.

Good luck!

One more thing: Do you have many other keys/FOBs on the same key ring? If so, remove them, and use just the single Nissan key.

Thanks for the reply. I have my primary key and a spare, both are original keys. Not copied, neither of them work. I only have one key on both sets. I called a locksmith. He's going to meet me at my car tomorrow around 2:30. Hopefully his fees aren't outrageous.

He said he charges a $35 service charge, +$75 if he needs to use his computer (because it uses up "tokens" every time he hooks it up to a car) and he charges an hourly rate as well, don't remember what he said it was. Am i getting raped or does this seem reasonable?

The price is very reasonable.

Re. your keys, it's strange that neither one of your two keys works. I wonder why ........ this pretty well throws out my hypothesis of key failure.

Just remember that you want the locksmith to "program the keys" - i.e, go through the procedure where the car computer (ECU) is taught to recognize your two keys. Also, ask him what the reason for the failure was, and let us know so that we can learn ....

I will definitely report back. I don't think anyone has really solved this issue. I've seen so many threads about this all over the place and all of them claim to have fixes. But no one ever has a cause it seems. I'm guessing a short somewhere caused NATS to forget my keys? I don't really know how the system works other than the key sends signal to NATS, NATS sends signal to ECU. And somewhere along the line that signal was miscommunicated or didn't match up with the expected code or something. I'm baffled.

Locksmith came and reprogrammed my keys for $110. Everything is working now. He didn't have a clue as to what caused the car to forget the keys in the first place. He was just as dumbfounded as I was.

I'm just glad I didn't have to tow the car to the dealer which is an hour away and pay an arm and a leg per key. I want to find out what caused it but I don't have the first clue where to begin looking and with the luck I've been having I would probably trigger it again.

You are lucky. I had this type of thing happen a few weeks ago and I had to get another ECU, then have it towed to the dealer for a $250 reprogramming charge..

Good for you. BTW, your story suggests this could happen to any one of us.
Did you watch how he re-programmed the keys? What tools did he use?
