Hi folks,
I'm new to the board, and maybe I should post this as a new topic -- but, I'm having the same sort of problem as KimberKenobi. I have a 2009 Versa , 1.6, that has 70,000 kilometres (Canada), the 5 year warranty expired on March 27th. In early April, out of the blue, after a 200 kilometre drive from Ottawa to Montreal, coming off the the highway into a traffic slowdown, the car would not shift out of 1st gear. I managed to drive slowly to my mother-in-law's, park the car, turn it off, started it again and then was able to drive normally. I came back home without any problems and later in the week I made an appointment to get my snow tires off with Nissan dealer (where I bought the car and have had it regularly serviced), and the problem occurred again on the way to the dealership. I felt 'lucky' that I'd be able to deliver a vehicle with a verifiable problem -- I staggered in with my flashers on, but they turned the car off before taking it out and couldn't reproduce the problem -- they did get a code from the diagnostic computer (P0720), but told me it 'cleared' and there were no other abnormal readings. I took the car home, but a few weeks later it happened again on a short trip, leaving me stuck in traffic unable to move more than 25 kmh. The next day it worked fine and I took it back to the dealership where they've now had it for three days, driven it for 160 kms, and cannot reproduce the conditions. They want me to pick up the car and tomorrow (Thursday) and tell me there's nothing they can do as long as they can't reproduce the problem! The sales rep called me and suggested that a trade in on a new car might be a solution -- I couldn't believe it! I explained that the car is now completely unreliable and even dangerous -- I mean, I'm concerned about taking my grandchildren on highway trips for fear of a problem on a highway ramp etc. Or, what if it drops into first when I'm driving on the highway? I've asked the dealership for a formal letter documenting the situation, but they have not yet agreed to provide one due to 'legal concerns' !! They have said they will treat the problem under the warranty however. The problem is, getting the car back doesn't solve the problem -- and having the problem occur again with me in the car, as it surely will, doesn't seem to mean much to the dealership. I guess someone has to have a serious accident, and have a letter, before this problem is figured out.
The dealership has provided good service to date, and I've been very happy with the car up until now -- but this is a very serious problem and I don't see any easy solutions -- does anybody have any suggestion for how I should proceed?
Thanks,
TMH
