Its a 90 Auto and just today I changed out the spark plugs, spark plug cables, air filter and a new valve cover gasket. I also bought a fuel filter but havent put it in yet.

Anyway, once I was done I turned her on and died right away. I kept trying and the engine would turn on but only run for a sec or two then stall. I thought it might be a spark and fuel problem, but there is spark and fuel. Then I thought the problem could be the fuel pump. I decided to pull the fuel pump fuse so that I may trouble shoot without having to pull the pump. Once I did, the car would not even turn on so the pump seems to be ok.

I then checked the ECU ang got codes 12 MAF & 13 Coolant Temp Sensor. All the cables seem to be ok at the MAF but I was able to find some helpful info here in the forums about the MAF. Tomorrow I will try and clean out the MAF hoping that will solve the problem.

But what confuses me is that:1. Shouldnt the car stay on during the open loop mode for the first minute, THEN die out due to the MAF not working properly?2. Why would it throw out code 13 for the Temp. Sensor when the car was cold to begin with.

Have someone try to start it while you are wiggling all of the harness connectors by hand. You could just have a corroded connection somewhere. Mine was stalling because the coolant temperature sensor (the one that goes to the ECU) harness connector was corroded and providing a faulty connection. A new harness connector for this was about $18 at the dealership.

You got the harness for 18 bucks? They tried to sell me the whole engine harness for 200 bucks. Do they sell just the temp sensor harness?

Yes some of the connectors have corrosion already. I've trying to clean them up. Gonna attempt to clean up the MAF connectors first and then give it a try.

On another note, is it just me or why do keep getting an error message everytime I try to reply. It says I must be logged in and that I entered and invalid user/pw. Only way to reply is the quick reply method.

It might be a vacuum leak somewhere, thats the problem I had when I did my timing chain swap. Try giving it gas and see if it runs/starts, if so, usually means the maf isn't seeing the right signal.

Vacuum leak some where could be the culprit, I just hate looking for leaks thats all.

But when the engine would turn over, I would give it gas and it would climb smoothly up to 2-3krpm then die out w/o sputtering.

Well I didnt get to do much today. Cant really check all the components when the battery is dead and someone has walked out with your jumper cables. So I went ahead and cleand up some corrosion on the MAF sensor, made sure the filter box was properly attached and found out I need a new distributor cap. Seems like the previous owner did a lousy job attaching or removing the cap because one of the screws on the cap was totally stripped. I had to break the cap in pieces in order to remove it. Perhaps tomorrow I will finally get to see what wrong and maybe fix it...

Got the car running now. But im not exactly sure wether it was the MAF that needed some cleaning or the Distributor cap being a bit loose. I still need the correct gasket since Nissan gave me the wrong one.

But for future reference, how can you tell the diff between the Hitachi and Mitsubishi distributors?
