I didnt say your alternator was bad, I said that you reversed the power wires to the starter and alternator. Therefore when you tried to turn over the engine, the power was sent to the alternator instead of the ECU. This causes you to blow one of the big fuses in the fuse box (75 amp or something). This could account for smoke if its near the fuse box in the engine bay.
The alternator fuse is located in the passenger side engine fuse box. I cant remember exactly what the fuse is called off the top of my head, but just check to see that none of them are blown and you should be good.
