I own a 98 Frontier 2wd with the ka24de. I recently bought this truck knowing it has problems. I had replaced the guides and tensioners to correct the nasty noises it made. When I swapped everything out, I set it at TDC and I did one piece at a time and made sure nothing moved or changed on me so that I wouldn't have to worry about it being out of time. What I didn't do was look to see if it had jumped time before I took it apart. The truck doesn't run any different than before I swapped out the parts, other than now being quiet, but I am trying to figure out why it doesn't have any power. I have tested EVERY component and done the full tuneup, timing, base idle, tps, electrical voltages, continuity tests, compression, yada yada. This is the only thing left. I am about 95% positive the cam timing is off.

Does anyone have any pics, of the cam positions, how they are supposed to look at TDC so when I take the valve cover off, I can get this thing back right? Does anyone have any tricks, secrets to set it up easily? I have been to JWT's site BUT the pics are of the double roller timing chain KA and the last pic of the single chain isn't going to help me either because I am still using stock cams not JWT's. I also have AllData but their pics, info, manual don't help at all.

PLEASE HELP???

Thank you,

D.J.

It doesn't matter which cams you use, so long as the lobe tips are pointed outward, 180* apart (as close to 180* as possible) and parallel to the head deck.

This is @ TDC. Also, when doing this, use the crank pulley timing marks to set number one to TDC. Once that is set and you install the upper chain, be sure to keep all the slack on the side where the tensioner is.

Thanks for the response.

I pulled it apart this weekend. CYl. 1 at TDC, Dist. rotor pointing at 1. Cams are facing 180 out away from each other. Aren't all of the cam lobes supposed to be off of the lifter buckets though? On cyl. 2 and 3 the acouple of the lobes have valves open. I thought that at TDC on the intake stroke that the cam should have no pressure on any of the valves. Maybe I'm wrong.

I figured out. I got a factory service manual from a buddy of mine. I found out that on the single roller timing chain cars, Frontier and Altima, that both cam dowels are supposed to be at 12 o'clock position. I got it all put back together and it runs great, power is back, idle is perfect, and I have a big grin on my face.
