its been a few weeks since ive touched the car...the scenario:Got the car running right after new thermostat and hooking up speed sensor to correct plug . Well it drove great during the day time, pulled and everything, tested the power with a quick burn out. Well, me and a friend drove it to his friends house...was fine. Then we went to another friends house..fine until we get almost to his house. Started making a ticking noise. Parked the car and waited it out...well we left and it was still there..i had to get home so we drove it for awhile...got pretty far before it became a grinding noise. The guy told me that there was a oil puddle in his parking lot.. Well i got it back to the house, oil was dark but only first oil change..no metal shaving or anything..thank god...the oil pan is dented so thats my first thought..but it drove fine for awhile before messing up. The weird thing is that when i went to drain the oil, the damn oil plug was loose. So im thinking that the oil just drained out and was low so it couldnt pull up oil. What are symptons of and failed oil pump?? Im gonna get the GReddy oil pan and a oil pressure gauge. But anything else I should check before trying to start it back up?? What are good oil pressures?? THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

Pull off the valve cover and check the head for any bad marks, cam lobe scoring, etc.

Sorry to say this but your engine is probably done for. You really shouldnt have driven it at all if there were werid sounds coming from the motor. In any case I would drop the pan out and take the valve cover off to check for gouging/scoring, most likely you will find something bad.

I would check to make sure that the engine is ok before you go out and spend money on a new oil pan and gauge

guys, his motor is not nessicarliy done for because it went without oil for lets say a mile.......its definitally not good for it, and it may not ever be back to spec without a full rebuild. but it may be drivable if you fill it back up with oil and be sure to rtv the drain plug when you put it back in.

please note that i said may....there is still a chance that a cylinder wall has been scored like a fother mucker

it is jsut gonna depend on if it was running bone dry (which a grinding noise would be a red flag and the engine should have been shut off immeditally). but i've seen engines take alot of abuse and still be opperable, most of our engines get abused HORRIABLY while they are in japan because no one over there cares about their car at all since it has to be replaced after i think its 3 years anyway

There is little O type ring on the oil pickup in the oil pan ( not on the pan it self but you know what i mean.)

Well I wasn't sure actually. I just swapped out my old oilpan and didn't change any of the o-rings. Hmmmmm

We had a customer pull his car in after driving about 1.5 hours to get to our shop, we heard a grinding noise so shut it off immediately. Remove the drain plug - nothing. Not a drop came out. The customer's father was a bit upset.......

Anyway, we filled it up with oil, set timing or whatever and he drove it away, nothing spun or ruined - lucky for him.

So you could be ok, don't panic yet! Follow the suggestions above and cross your fingers.

I had a 351 Mustang overheat when I was a kid and it siezed the motor and the rear wheels skidded to a halt. 2 hours later I filled it with water and drove it away, had it for a year after that with no ill effects.
