I have a '93 240sx hatchback. I just bought a new pioneer stereo to replace the factory installed stereo.

Well when I pulled the antenna plug on the back of the factory installed stereo (fis), there were two prongs in the wire whereas the new pioneer stereo only has a simple single jack. I read that the two pronged is better because then the stereo chooses between two antennas in my car to get the optimum gain (not necessarily the strongest).

So I am looking for suggestions on how to install my new stereo.

1. Can I buy a device that will take advantage of the two antenna system that will sit externally to the new stereo? What is the device called? Is it worth the effort and cost?

2. Can I just buy a simple adaptor that will go between the two-prong wire and the simple input jack in the back of the stereo?

Sidenote:Although the car came with a power antenna, I have replaced it with a non-powered version (four years ago) after my wide spoiler kept breaking the powered one off.

ThanksBob

Pretty much any stereo shop and even Wal-mart will have an adapter to use one of the wires. You really sholdn't bother trying to use the dual system. I'm only using one and I haven't noticed any problems.

Actually I think the adapter lets you still use the system. Also why do you need two freakin antennas. The only thing I can think of is when you pass a frequency crossover. Two different frequency waves cross each other from two different stations. That might help. But those are like a second if your moving. Cause they are only at most a foot wide.

Well I did get an adapter that only uses the main antenna (from Myer-Emco). The reception is noticeably poorer on the new stereo. The more I have learned about the "diversity antenna", the more I appreciate it. Anytime your signal is going in and out while you drive, either quickly or slowly? Well that would not be happening if you had a diversity antenna. That is caused by the radio signal source coming from two different directions - usually the main antenna and a reflection off of a building or something. Well when the waves are in phase, great. When they are 180 out of phase, then they cancel each other out. While you drive you are changing distances from each source (main and reflected) and the two signals are going in and out of phase at your antenna, hence, your sound going in and out. The diversity antenna system can change between using one antenna and using the other thousands of times a second and you can't hear the change.

Basically, with whatever other factors may be affecting it as well, my reception is now annoying. I listen to the radio alot and am looking into getting an external antenna amplifier that takes advantage of both antennas. Incidentally, if yous have a linksys wireless router... the two antenna on the back? Those are part of a diversity antenna system and the router is continually choosing an antenna to take the better signal from.

Anyway, if anyone can suggest a good antenna amplifier for the car that handles diversity, please let me know.

ThanksBob

What kind of antenna adapter did you get. They make antenna adapters for diversity antennas. Go to http://www.installer.com Can you tell I use this a lot. Man my boss did a good job.
