ok, so my friend gave me an amp and said that I could use it for my system that I was making. I finally got the subwoofer and now everytime I turn the stereo on the amplifier goes straight to protect. Also, my grounds are good.... Any ideas??????

What size power wire are you running? Where is it grounded? Are you sure you have everything connected properly?

I'm running it to a Saga ummm ..... I dont know what kind but a 4 channel amp and it's grounded to the same spot where my old system used to be. The protection light comes on when I have NOTHING but the power ground and remote wired.

Again, what size power wire are you running? Where is it grounded (exactly). Take some pictures of your grounding spot and how you have it connected.

I'll post pics in just a sec... I think I have an 8 gauge power and ground. Yeah I know that I should go with like 4 or 2 but thats what I had.

Amp is bad.

The only time the size of the wires would matter is if you tried to pull more current then the wires support.

Since the amp goes into protect mode with no speakers connected i'll assume it's bad.

Since this is for subs i'll recommend a Hifnoics amp.

bummer, well it was free, and I was expecting it to go bad soon but not right away haha. What would go bad in the amp? I've read that usually transistors go if the amp gets over heated or its pushed too hard. Any thoughts? I'm pretty much broke and I miss my bass. Might as well try to fix it b.c. I have tools and a soldering iron.

Hard to tell what is wrong.

It could have gotten broken just by a little bump. Sometimes a solder joint isn't firm enough and breaks very easily

would a bad ground in the amp cause this? b.c. I think I see a ground that melted the solder to touch another solder point.could that be it?

Your buddy gave you a bad amp. Thats an internal fault somewhere in the amp. Go ahead and crack it open to see if you can find the problem, since its pretty much a paperweight right now.

yea I knew that it was a bad amp, I opened it last night and looks like the ground that was soldered was bad b/c it touched other solder points. It was a good amp when he first got it too.
