I took my 01' Pathy 3.5 SE in for regular oil and filter change 7/28. Picked it up ( service is about 2 miles away and parked it it garage. No SES codes what so ever. Took it out of the garage for a store trip and the SES light goes on. Pathy has 85,000 on it and other sensors have been changed as needed including the one that is supposedly failing at 58,000. I did some online research and this code shows up as left (drivers side) cam postion sensor. Read a post from a Nissan Tech and one of the things he pointed out was to check the oil level as if its low or overfilled it will through this code (p1145) out. I read and reset the code several times with my Actron OBD II scanner. Sure enough, I check the dipstick and the oil is over filled. I am taking it back the service center tomorrow morning to raise some hell. Anyone run into this condition with sensors set off because of overfilling? Quick responses are appreciated.

I had the P1145 and its corresponding P1140 (other side) camshaft sensor codes. I replaced them both and the CEL went away. They were bad for at least 20k miles before I replaced them. But anyway, overfilling by a significant amount is bad no matter what.

Yeah if you want more info on the sensors check out this article:

TC tks for the reply. That would be the case if both forward cam sensors were NOT replaced. Both were at replace at 58000 based om a failure to diagnose corrrectly. I only paid for ome sensor based on their failure to diagnose correctly.

You're welcome. Please let us know if the proper oil level fixes it. If not, you can try swapping the "bad" sensor to the other side and see if the problem moves.

You should be very angry with them. The last step of an oil change (after running the engine a little), is to check the
dipstick. These dipsticks didn't.

They probably won't drain it out. They'll suck some out the dipstick tube.

Assuming the oil level is the cause, it takes two drive cycles with the problem to turn on the SES light.

I took the Pathy back to the service center and the leveled off oil, took a reading with there scanner got the same P1145 code readout. The tech said the code was also a fuel/air mixture code and did not necessarily mean the cam position sensor is bad. They resent the SES light. I drove it about a block and the light came back on. I resent it again with my Actron scanner took it out for a few miles and the light did not come back on. I let it sit for 4 hours and then started it back up and the SES was back on. Don't remember if I mentioned it but the left and right sensors were replaced at 57,000 miles. The sensors went bad causing the Pathy to die once the sensors heated up. When they cooled it would run. I have 86,000 on it now. I'm taking it back in Thursday for diagnostics

From the FSM section on P1140/P1145:

Possible Cause
I Harness or connectors (Intake valve timing control position sensor circuit is open or
shorted)
I Intake valve timing control position sensor.
I Crankshaft position sensor (REF)
I Crankshaft position sensor (POS)
I Camshaft position sensor (PHASE)

Nothing about Fuel air mixture.

I'd unplug and replug the sensors to clean the contacts, clear the code and see what happens.

Then I'd swap the left and right sensors (if they are the same). If it changes to P1140, it's the sensor that started on the driver's side and is now on the passenger's side. I'm guessing it's not the last three causes because then I think you would have both P1140 and P1145.

There's a rather extensive debug procedure in the FSM.

You are really lucky that the code comes right back. Makes debugging quicker.

Chuck,

TKX. I will unplug and replug the sensors, examine contacts, and clear the code and see what happens. Worst case I take in for diagnostics.

Hi,I'm new here so have a little to learn about the sight but my 2001 pathy has had so many of the problems on here it is unbelievable.I have had up to 12 codes on mine at the same time so I started with the nonworking speedometer,$1400 later fixed..2 broken gears in transfer case that drive the speedo gear broken but first tried sensor after all what are the chances of finding the real problem. Now I only have 2 codes left ...both camshaft position sensors and after roaming around in this forum,I am starting to beleive it is the sensors so I am starting with the $54 one and see what happens and I'm going to clean connectors and verify the ground which is what I need help on.Are all ground wires black and where would that one be.My oil level is fine and the mechanic said it is probably the timing chain of which there are 2 but after burning $300 for an unneeded sensor i have more faith in this forum lol.

First, try tightening the ground screws:

Black is ground for both sensors. See page EC-489 of the factory service manual for a diagnostic procedure.
