Year, Model: 98 infiniti QX4 4x4

Milage on car: 120k

location: just drove the car from Boulder, CO to Amherst, MA

Recent repair: I got this car in Aug. and I changed timing belt and changed transmission fluid and brake fluid before driving to MA.

About 1.5 month ago, I started to notice there is a clunk noise from transmission after starting up the car and in low gear. About last week, after I started the car and switched to D, I heard a snap sound from the transmission and then I could hear something scratch inside the transmission when the car is in low gear. I also tried reverse gear, sometimes, it works but sometimes doesnt. I just wonder which part of the transmssion got wrong and what is your suggestion? thank you!!

Possibly somethings gone wrong with the torque convertor, possibly the turbine or stator. It could even be a sensor which if not fixed will lead to an even steeper repair bill. Best bet is to take it to an Infiniti dealer or mechanic and have them pull of the codes, if possible while driving and shifting. Has the transmission always clunked when putting it in gear? My jeep's does and its apparently normal.

7 year old Used car without transmission maintenances [fluid exchanges/screen filter replacements]............ worst case is $3,000-$4,000 [4 wheel drive cost more] for a new rebuilt oem transmission.

20,000 miles beyond [100k] design life can be considerd good. Why they only give 70k driveline warranty.

Let dealer diagnose .........maybe a pan drop/clean flush but it is pretty late 120k to start PM.

What did the expert technican prebuy report [you pay for] say?
