help!! a/c control unit...no lights

hey, i have a 95 and for quite some time now, the little people icons in the a/c unit panel are completely off at night when my headlights are on. once every 100 or so times, however, they come on. they came on about 2 weeks ago but now they are off again. the same thing goes for the blue<->red cold/hot air control...and sometimes they dont light up at the same time. the ones that come on are the "1,2,3,4" speed of the fan control and the green lights under the buttons. what should i do? do i need a new unit? or is there a wire that is acting up?

little people icons..lol ...if it is not all of them together and only sometimes this light in the head or that light i would say your problem is isolated to the control head alone. try pulling the head out and inspecting the connections for the electrical portion of it. could just be loose bulbs or wire connections. btw dont mean to poke fun at you i have just never heard that part of the control unit reffered to in such a way. that protion is called the mode door control.
