my 97 hb has a weird problem. Occasionally it with stutter, cut completely out then pop back on. I have checked everything i could think of, MAF, TPS, MAP, I have replaced the distributor, MAF, timing chain tensioner, fuel filter, checked timing to make sure in did not skip a tooth. I own a diagnostic scanner. When i replaced the distributor it ran a lot better. I also cleaned the injectors but i don't know if i should just replace them. The truck has over 250,000 miles.
I also cleared out the catalytic converter and put an E.G.R. cut off plate on it and i'm not to sure if that would affect it in a bad way but it didn't seem to run any different. the problem usually happens after initial start up, it will run rough and when i press the throttle slowly it will hit 2400 RPM and bounce back and fourth like a rev limiter, if i hold it there it will eventually go away after a minute or to. My problem is really weird and ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!

Long shot but check injector and any other electrical connections for oxidation, or maybe the computer control unit is flaking out.

Inside the intake manifold there is a swirl valve,if the valve is not functioning properly this will present the symptoms you have described. Check the Swirl control valve and the swirl control actuator (test for vacuum leaks) Check the vacuum lines going to the valves for leaks. Make sure the swirl valve operates freely.
