wather pump housing should be very strong against abuse.even very tight belt will not cause a break.

are you sure you have GENUINE NISSAN water pump? do you get it from dealer or somewhere else? it really soulds like you have a remanufactured/aftermarket water pump.

All purchased from the same source? A bad batch/run of them? Have they broken along similar lines?

A torque wrench has been used to tighten the bolts?

Are there any signs of damage to the corresponding mating surface and do they spin freely after tightening the bolts and before attaching and tightening the belt to spec?

Is the fan out of balance or otherwise damaged?

sounds like you most likely have an aftermarket pump. i took my J30 to a shop for a timing belt job and as i was driving back to school the water pump housing snapped and the clutch fan hit my radiator and i started leaking coolant. luckily i was only a min away from school and finished driving it there. shop bought a pump directly from infiniti and it worked fine. i unfortunately totaled the car a few thousand miles later. i now have a 94 J30 and I did my own timing belt job with a nissan water pump. its held up for over a year now and about 12,000 miles. make sure it is a genuine nissan pump. an overtightened belt shouldnt mess it up. also check to make sure your clutch fan is secured properly. if it isnt level and vibrating a lot, you could be breaking them because of the clutch fan since it bolts directly to the water pump. exactly why i went to e-fan setup.

Hey Swimshark,
Can you tell me the details about your e-fan setup for the J30? I have a 1993 J30 with 108k and have recently had two broken water pumps. I want to go e-fan!

99sleeper.

Where in Toronto are you? There are a handful of reputable shops in the Toronto area that specialize in J30/300zx. Get it fixed right.

There is Nizztex in North York, they've been around for 20 years. Fair, reasonably priced service. The Nissan dealer in Ajax has an older master mechanic in place who knows these cars inside and out. The OntarioZcar owners club/forum has a gentleman who has a shop somewhere in Markham(can't remember details). It's worth joining to get info.

I would be very suspect of the fan and clutch, even if it wasn't fault the first time it has been beaten pretty badly by now, most likely causing repeat failures.

We race, when the original pump started leaking I went to the dealer for another, its lasted over 20,000 full race miles, about 13,000 with no fan.. I know this is contrary to conventional thinking but the belt would squeal if it wasn't guitar string tight.

Just reporting our luck.

I had a beck arnley pump launch into my radiator after 25 miles.
I bought a new nissan/infiniti pump, infiniti pump pulley, a fan clutch from the manufacturer of the originally equipped clutch, and a genuine nissan/infiniti fan blade (new). All new parts. 1000 miles The pump broke. It broke as a result of the pump's mounting surface, for the fan, walking off the end of the pump. The belt was not tightened with gauge. I strategically tightened it for a few miles, until it stopped chirping. I assume all parts were in balance, as they were new.
I'm going for an electric fan too. I'm also interested in the year of this ford taurus 3.8 fan

95 Taurus 38 liter electric fan (junkyard)
Make sure it says FoMoCo and not Dorman it anything aftermarket

Electric fan wiring kit that includes a relay, temperature switch, and circuit breaker. (Speed shops stock these)

Adapter to splice into the radiator hose to install the temp sensor. (Speed shop)

My preferences: temp switch rated at 195 degrees FAN ON. 170 degrees fan OFF. Switch-adapter installed at upper hose since it's where Nissan-Infiniti designated their temp sensor and sendor location. Wire into the slower of the fan's two speeds. It's proven to be enough cfm and easier on you electrical system.

In the future, I'll be wiring a manual switch to the high speed wire. Just to be prepared for any cooling system mishaps.
I'll also be wiring a discreet led light somewhere near the the gauges, to let me know the fan is on. I don't know it's mileage. I'd like to monitor its status
