So quite a while back.... I noticed a bumping noise on my way to work. The liftgate was not properly locked/shut and also would not operate at all. Not with the fob, not with the button on the liftgate, not with the dash button. (and no the liftgate cancel switch is not on/off) I stopped off at a Discount Auto to see if it was a fuse, etc. since it was on my way. Could not find any bad fuses. But coincidentally while under the hood the mechanic noticed my battery had serious corrosion on the terminals. Since no solution and I had to drive a good way to work, took it in to the dealership. After keeping it all day, they told me the entire motor was bad and a $900 fix. I said no thanks, wanted to get a second opinion or have my hubby DIY for cheaper. So the only way to lock or unlock is manually in through the back of the car with the panel off and flip the lever. Since this happened, totally forgot about the battery corrosion for a while, until battery problems. Long story short a couple of times the liftgate worked, but only for a short period, and only after un-hooking and re-hooking battery. Sooooooo..... I feel like it is not the whole motor?! How could it possibly work briefly if the motor was dead? Any expert ideas or thoughts out there? Or am I totally off.... Just really don't want to spend $900 for just my liftgate to work.... HELP !!!

My 09 liftgate broke last year. It cost me $1700 or so. I always suspected that the dealer mechanic wasn't sure what the whole problem was and was fishing around as it took three trips for them to repair. They claimed the first time that they ordered the wrong part after they spent all day installing only to find out that was the wrong part. Next trip they said oops they had to order an additional part and that's when I suspect that they were actually able to identify the complete problem. I complained to Nissan about the time and the total cost and of course they could care less.

During the second repair attempt I complained to the dealer and asked to see the nechanic and they took me out to the repair area and showed me what they had done this time around and that the there was still a failing new part that had to be ordered. If I remember correctly, they could get the liftgate to open just once but then it would trip a fault that could only be reset by disconnecting the battery cable. They cautioned that using this trick would cause more damage to the one new part that they had already installed and that was why they had to order and install another part. After the repair and one year later all is well and I have had no problems.

We are having a problem with our liftgate on our 2009 Murano. Were you able to figure out the problem? Or did you end up having to spend the $900 to fix it? Thank you for any help you can provide. Terence

Do you know what that 1 part was called? I am having a problem with ours and if I can order/install that part myself... it could save me a bundle of $. Thank you.

i will post this for posterity as I hope these people earlier in the year found the answer to their problems. do NOT replace your motor. i am shocked that even all of the "just answer" threads i read recommended this. i had the exact same issue after my battery died and was severely corroded. very trusted mechanic replaced the battery and suddenly trunk would not work, auto-window-up would not work, wipers would not work at intermittent and heat shut off every time i turned car off and had to be restarted. it was simply b/c car's power got too low and it lost its programming. had to take back to mechanic so he could re-initialize all of those things and they worked fine. as a nissan owner for 8 years now (armada then murano) - never believe a dealer!!!
