I have the whole family in the car and just getting on the highway when the car starts making a huge clunking!

At first I thought it was a flat as it make the whole car lurch with each clunk.

Tires are fine.

Then it thought it might have been a broke CV joint, but visually inspecting then looking under the car they look ok.

Engine is fine, the clunks happen at random intervals at any speed. More noticable inside the car.

I am thinking it is the CVT, anyone had this before? I am thinking I will have to have it towed to a dealer, which I don't like the idea as I am on a tight budget.

Anything I can check to possibly fix the problem?

I just heard back from Armory Nissan, and it is a busted transfer case, which is being replaced under warranty!

Just out of curiosity, did you buy this car new or used?

A little off-topic, but can you provide any details on extended warrany on the CVT? Where did you get this info, and does it apply to all Nissan CVT's, and all model years? Any info would be greatly appreciated, and probably very big news for all owners, especially ones who are a little worried about long term durability of the CVT. Thanks in advance. (Also, if Nissan is provided FREE extended warranties on the CVT, why don't they notify all owners and get the full benefit? This is something that definately plays in the favor of Nissan, shows their confidence in the CVT, and shows that they treat their customers right, so why not let everyone know?)

I have confirmation from the dealer (Sherwood Nissan near Edmonton Alberta are AWESOME), I quote:"I just finished talking to the service manager here and he has informed me that Nissan has extended the warranty on all CVT’s to a 10yr 200,000km warranty. As far as vehicles made in 2011- he is not sure what they are going to provide as a warranty, as they have not mentioned anything about this."

This is GREAT news, probably the biggest news I've heard since buying this vehicle. Now we can stop whining about whether or not the CVT will be reliable over the long term, Nissan has apparently grown tired of this mis-concpetion as well, and put their money where their mouth is. This proves their confidence in the CVT, and also proves they value their customers. This is also a good business move, because I'm sure they'll win back some angry customers, namely 2003 Murano owners with failed CVT's just out of the regular warranty period. But I still can't find an official announcement online.

Just confirming my suspicions, that's all. From what I've observed over the years, many of the Muranos with drivetrain problems were previous rentals. A few people who rented their Muranos have even admitted that they knew they were only going to have the cars a short time, so they didn't bother taking care of them.

Add to that the fact that a lot of people treated their Muranos as SUV's (instead of the cars they really are), subjecting them to pretty severe driving conditions. Of course when buying a certified used car from a Nissan dealer this shouldn't be a huge concern. But, unfortunately especially wth Muranos, it is.

Good luck. Keep us informed how yours turns out.
